In this paper, I propose to analyze the prosodic realization of two modalities (declarative and interrogative) through perception study of whispered voice in French. I present results of two modality identification tasks. Results of identification test based on natural stimuli show a good identification rate of the modality. The values of the duration of final syllable seem to be the main acous...

Results from event-related potential (ERP) studies are reviewed that investigated crossmodal links in spatial attention between vision, audition and touch to find out which stages in the processing of sensory stimuli are affected by such crossmodal links. ERPs were recorded in response to visual, auditory, and tactile stimuli under conditions where attention was directed to a specific location ...

Prolonged exposure, or adaptation, to a stimulus in 1 modality can bias, but also enhance, perception of a subsequent stimulus presented within the same modality. However, recent research has also found that adaptation in 1 modality can bias perception in another modality. Here, we show a novel crossmodal adaptation effect, where adaptation to a visual stimulus enhances subsequent auditory perc...

Sequential sampling models provide a useful framework for understanding human decision making. A key component of these models is an evidence accumulation process in which information is accrued over time to a threshold, at which point a choice is made. Previous neurophysiological studies on perceptual decision making have suggested accumulation occurs only in sensorimotor areas involved in mak...

Sensory substitution devices aim at replacing or assisting one or several functions of a deficient sensory modality by means of another sensory modality. Despite the numerous studies and research programs devoted to their development and integration, sensory substitution devices have failed to live up to their goal of allowing one to "see with the skin" (White et al., 1970) or to "see with the ...

This study investigates the haptic identification of incomplete raised-line drawings (i.e., pictures with a missing element) by sighted and early visually impaired children aged 9-10 years. Incomplete pictures have already been used in the visual modality to assess perceptual reasoning in children, but not yet under the haptic modality. We found that success at identifying incomplete raised-lin...

Previous neuroimaging studies of perceptual priming have reported priming-related decreases in the extrastriate cortex. However, because these experiments have used visual stimuli, it is unclear whether the observed decreases are associated speciacally with some aspect of visual perceptual processing or with more general aspects of priming. We studied withinand cross-modality priming using an a...

This research explores the way in which young children (5 years of age) and adults use perceptual and conceptual cues for categorizing objects processed by vision or by audition. Three experiments were carried out using forced-choice categorization tasks that allowed responses based on taxonomic relations (e.g., vehicles) or on schema category relations (e.g., vehicles that can be seen on the r...

Recent studies have reported that sensory cortices process more than one sensory modality, challenging the long-lasting concept that they process only one. However, both the identity of these multimodal responses and whether they contribute to perceptual judgments is unclear. We recorded from single neurons in somatosensory cortices and primary auditory cortex while trained monkeys discriminate...

This study examined the effects of context type on the use of context while lipreading and listening. Results indicate that the ability to use context by type and modality are not global skills, but instead are specific to the context type and perceptual modality in use. Results further suggest that context is more readily used in the visual channel over the auditory channel.
