Effective enhancement of the performance of black dye based dye-sensitized solar cells has been achieved by MgO or Al(2)O(3) surface modification of the TiO(2) photoelectrode. The conversion efficiency was improved from 10.4% to 10.8% due to the blocking effect of the thin overlayer at the TiO(2) surface.

A microwave hydrothermal reaction of colloidal titanates is presented as a cost-effective synthesis to produce TiO(2) single nanocrystals. The photoelectrode consisting of anisotropic nanorods and V-shaped twins has a significant advantage for achieving an appreciable incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency of 85.6% for the dye-sensitized solar cell.

The Mn-oxide/Nb:SrTiO3 photoelectrode for oxygen evolution reaction was investigated by in situ Mn K-edge XAFS spectroscopy under UV irradiation. The oxidization of the Mn oxide was observed via photoexcited carrier transfer, which results in the positive potential shift of the Mn oxide cocatalyst toward oxygen evolution reaction.

Covered with Pt: A uniform catalyst profile that ensures effective radial charge collection from high-aspect-ratio Si nanowires was achieved by atomic layer deposition of Pt nanoparticles.
