aisi 304l austenitic stainless steel with different grain sizes of 0.5 -12 μm was obtained through the martensiticprocess. corrosion behavior of different samples was investigated in a 0.5m hcl solution using open circuitpotential, potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy tests. also, the correlationbetween the grain size and pitting corrosion resistance was asses...

Interactions between copper and chlorine disinfectants were examined from the perspective of disinfectant decay and copper pitting corrosion. Sparingly soluble cupric hydroxide catalyzed the rapid decay of free chlorine, which in turn, led to production of less soluble and more crystalline phases of cupric hydroxide. The catalytic activity of the cupric hydroxide was retained over multiple cycl...

In this work, we performed comparative studies of the effect of surface preparation of Ti6Al4V and Ti6Al7Nb biomedical alloys and the influence of endothelial cells on their corrosion behaviour in PBS (Phosphate Buffered Saline). Two different methods of surface modification were applied - polishing and sandblasting. The polished Ti6Al7Nb alloy was found to have the best resistance against gene...

The aim of this article is to review those aspects of corrosion behaviour that are most relevant to the clinical application of implant alloys. The special modes of corrosion encountered by implant alloys are presented. The resistance of the different materials against the most typical corrosion modes (pitting corrosion, crevice corrosion and fretting corrosion) is compared, together with obser...

Our research on employing the cellular automata methodology to corrosion and passivation phenomena is reviewed. Examples of a peculiar pit development are found and presented. The diffusion rate in the corroding medium is argued and shown in the simulation results to affect mainly the characteristic length scale for the corrosion process. New data for the pitting corrosion development on a plan...

The new superaustenitic stainless steel UNS S32654 (Avesta Sheffield 654 SMO) is proposed for condenser tubes in desalination and power plants. A number of tests illustrating its corrosion resistance in a variety of chloride containing environments are being reviewed in terms of pitting, crevice corrosion and stress corrosion cracking. Relevant mechanical and physical properties are described. ...

Localized corrosion of Cu and Al thin films exposed to aqueous NaCl solutions was studied using liquid cell transmission electron microscopy (LCTEM). We demonstrate that potentiostatic control can be used to initiate pitting and that local compositional changes, due to focused ion beam implantation of Au(+) ions, can modify the corrosion susceptibility of Al films.

The contribution of bacteria to the corrosion mass loss and to pitting of mild steel was observed over 2.5 years using parallel streams of unpolluted natural (biotic) and nominally sterilized (abiotic) Pacific Ocean coastal seawater. As also observed by others, in artificial laboratory exposures, corrosion mass loss within the first few days of exposure was much greater in the biotic stream. Ho...

Corrosion surface damage in the form of pitting and micro-cracks is observed in many metals. Cracks usually initiate from the pits and grow under cyclic stresses and eventually lead to material failure. An image analysis based on wavelet transforms and fractals was used to study the corrosion morphology of nickel aluminum bronze metal under varying corrosion conditions and applied stresses. Ima...

Allegheny Ludlum Type 316Ti (UNS S31635) is a titanium stabilized version of Type 316 molybdenum-bearing austenitic stainless steel. It is also known as DIN/EN designation No. 1.4571. The Type 316 alloys are more resistant to general corrosion and pitting/crevice corrosion than the conventional chromium-nickel austenitic stainless steels such as Type 304. They also offer higher creep, stress-ru...
