The basal proton motive force (PMF) levels and the influence of the bacteriocin nisin on the PMF were determined in Listeria monocytogenes Scott A. In the absence of nisin, the interconversion of the pH gradient (Z delta pH) and the membrane potential (delta psi) led to the maintenance of a fairly constant PMF at -160 mV over the external pH range 5.5 to 7.0. The addition of nisin at concentrat...

RATIONALE This case report describes the progression of primary myelofibrosis (PMF) to polycythemia vera (PV), and discuss its potential mechanisms. PATIENT CONCERNS The patient was admitted because of abdominal discomfort and enlarged spleen for 19 months. DIAGNOSIS A case of PMF progressed to PV was retrospectively analyzed. There were 19 months between the diagnosis of PMF and PV. The JA...

We report a case of recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy caused by coalworkers' pneumoconiosis with progressive massive fibrosis (PMF). This illustrates that PMF alone may be added to the list of lesions which can cause recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy. However, efforts should always be made to exclude more common causes, in particular bronchogenic carcinoma, before attributing the palsy to PMF.

BACKGROUND Vascular events represent the most frequent complications of thrombocytemias. We aimed to evaluate their risk in the WHO histologic categories of Essential Thrombocytemia (ET) and early Primary Myelofibrosis (PMF). METHODS From our clinical database of 283 thrombocytemic patients, we selected those with available bone marrow histology performed before any treatment, at or within 1 ...

BACKGROUND An increase in the frequency of circulating endothelial colony forming cells (ECFCs), the only subset of endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) truly belonging to the endothelial phenotype, occurs in patients affected by primary myelofibrosis (PMF). Herein, they might contribute to the enhanced neovascularisation of fibrotic bone marrow and spleen. Store-operated Ca2+ entry (SOCE) activ...

We report a case of lung cancer arising from progressive massive fibrosis (PMF) associated with pneumoconiosis. In this case, fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) was able to clearly distinguish the lung cancer from PMF, suggesting a potential usefulness of FDG-PET in cancer screening in patients with pneumoconiosis. To our knowledge, this is the first descripti...

Peptide-Mass Fingerprinting (PMF) encompasses a number of techniques for protein characterization which have as a first step the cleaving of target proteins by chemical or enzymatic reagents. Software systems exist which perform similar analyses. However, this is the first study which examines theoretically the effectiveness of the particular reagents for PMF. In this study, the task of PMF was...

In response to pervasive sexual selection, protein sex pheromones often display rapid mutation and accelerated evolution of corresponding gene sequences. For proteins, the general dogma is that structure is maintained even as sequence or function may rapidly change. This phenomenon is well exemplified by the three-finger protein (TFP) superfamily: a diverse class of vertebrate proteins co-opted...

Bacterial type IV pili are essential for adhesion to surfaces, motility, microcolony formation, and horizontal gene transfer in many bacterial species. These polymers are strong molecular motors that can retract at two different speeds. In the human pathogen Neisseria gonorrhoeae speed switching of single pili from 2 µm/s to 1 µm/s can be triggered by oxygen depletion. Here, we address the ques...

Ion-mediated interaction is important for the properties of polyelectrolytes such as colloids and nucleic acids. The effective pair interactions between two polyelectrolytes have been investigated extensively, but the many-body effect for multiple polyelectrolytes still remains elusive. In this work, the many-body effect in potential of mean force (PMF) between like-charged nanoparticles in var...
