Minimum energy conical intersection (MECI) geometries were searched for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) consisting of up to 26 atoms. The energy barriers to the obtained MECIs showed a correlation with their fluorescence quantum yields. This provides a theoretical rationale for the size dependence of the fluorescence quantum yields seen in these PAHs.

In this work, we subject bi- and terpyrenyls to selective fusion for formation of extended polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Connecting the pyrene units at 4-4'- or 1-4'-positions led to smooth formation of extended PAHs, achieved via cyclodehydrogenation. This is far more difficult if pyrene is coupled in the 1,1'-position.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa DQ8, which was isolated from the crude oil polluted soil in the Daqing oilfield of China, can efficiently degrade diesel, crude oil, n-alkanes, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Here, we present a 6.8-Mb assembly of its genome sequence. We have annotated 23 coding sequences (CDSs) responsible for catabolism of n-alkanes and PAHs.
