The model of biofilm infection was first proposed over a decade ago. Recent scientific advances have added much to our understanding of biofilms, usually polymicrobial communities, which are commonly associated with chronic infection. Metagenomics has demonstrated that bacteria pursuing a biofilm strategy possess many mechanisms for encouraging diversity. By including multiple bacterial and/or ...

Chronic polymicrobial infections are associated with increased virulence compared to monospecies infections. However, our understanding of microbial dynamics during polymicrobial infection is limited. A recent study by Limoli and colleagues (D. H. Limoli, G. B. Whitfield, T. Kitao, M. L. Ivey, M. R. Davis, Jr., et al., mBio 8:e00186-17, 2017, https://doi.org/10.1128/mBio.00186-17) provides insi...

In this study, we describe 13 patients with prosthetic infections due to Finegoldia magna (2% of our tested series). Patients presented with either polymicrobial infection after an open fracture or nosocomial infection after recent prosthesis implantation. Molecular techniques are critical for diagnosis, and recommended antibiotic prophylaxis has poor activity against F. magna.

Recent reports support the concept that the major defect in polymicrobial sepsis is an impaired immunologic response to infection. Oligodeoxynucleotides containing CpG sequence motifs (CpG-ODN) were previously shown to induce immune protection in models of chronic infection with intracellular bacteria, parasites, and viruses due to their ability to augment IFN-gamma-dependent Th1 responses. Her...

We report an aggressive case of polymicrobial bacteremia in a patient with renal pelvis carcinoma. A 76-year-old man developed watery diarrhea after undergoing chemotherapy. He became unconscious and went into shock. Laboratory data showed severe neutropenia, renal failure, and lactic acidosis. Chest radiography showed multiple opacities. He died despite aggressive fluid resuscitation, catechol...
