This work studies a new distance function which takes into account expert knowledge by making use of fuzzy partitions. It considers the symbolic distances between concepts and is equivalent to the Euclidean distance for regular partitions made of triangular membership functions. Its behaviour is investigated in comparison with that of the Euclidean distance and its interest is shown for cluster...

Carbon dioxide causes green house effect and has been considered as a pollutant source forsafe environment. Since combustion of fossil fuel may create tremendous amount of carbon dioxide, detecting any pollutant sources would be important to eliminate the origin of pollution sources.Evaluation of smoke dispersion generated by the power plant utilizing fossil fuel is the objective of thispaper. T...

Acoustic signals are used for long-range communication in many animals from insects to birds and mammals. Long-range signals are used primarily by males to advertise and defend their home ranges or territories or to attract mates. During transmission over long distances, the structure of signals becomes progressively degraded. At the position at which a receiver makes a decision to respond, the...

The paper reports on a survey undertaken amongst first year students who were taking introductory courses in departments within Schools of IT at two South African universities. The purpose of the survey was to understand factors influencing career choice and how educationalists could use this to encourage enrollment in computer-related degree programmes. This paper considers association of valu...

The transition to a low carbon economy demands new strategies for maintaining competitiveness and benefiting from ‘green growth’. A network of stakeholders offers opportunities for, as well as constraints to, organisational growth and successful low carbon strategies. This multiple-case study explores the relational dynamics between the case organisations and a range of stakeholders. We find th...

The lack of women in leadership across higher education has been problemitised in the literature. Often contemporary discourses promote ‘fixing the women’ as a solution. Consequently, interventions aimed at helping women break through ‘the glass ceiling’ abound. This article argues that the gendered power relations at play in universities stubbornly maintain entrenched inequalities whereby, reg...

Search effectiveness for tasks where the retrieval units are clearly defined documents is generally evaluated using standard measures such as mean average precision (MAP). However, many practical speech search tasks focus on content within large spoken files lacking defined structure. These data must be segmented into smaller units for search which may only partially overlap with relevant mater...

Following Willson and Warkentin’s [42] call for understanding the interaction between employees and the organization in the context of computer abuse, this paper investigates the effect of espoused institutional pressure on misuse intention in South Korea. In addition, we hypothesize the effect of culture in the form of self-construal, power distance and Confucian dynamism on users’ perceptions...

This paper gives a short overview about the types of power stations in Germany and Poland. The energy production in Germany in 2012 was 629,7 TWh. Every type of power plant poses a risk to humans and the environment but in a different way and to a different extent. A discrete mathematical method, named Hasse diagram technique is applied. The software package used is the PyHasse software. A firs...

A classical model is used for the power consumption of cryptographic devices. It is based on the Hamming distance of the data handled with regard to an unknown but constant reference state. Once validated experimentally it allows an optimal attack to be derived called Correlation Power Analysis. It also explains the defects of former approaches such as Differential Power Analysis.
