超純水の製造において，ホウ素の高レベルな除去は長年の課題である。その化学的性質から，膜ろ過では除去率が低いだけでなく，イオン交換樹脂では選択性が低い。ホウ素に特化した除去技術としてN-メチル-D-グルカミン基を導入したホウ素選択性キレート樹脂を用いた方法が挙げられるが，樹脂自体の清浄度が低く，後段の水質の悪化が問題であった。新たに開発した特殊ホウ素除去樹脂は，キレート樹脂に加えて強酸性陽イオン交換樹脂と強塩基性陰イオン交換樹脂を最適比率で配合することで，キレート樹脂由来の溶出物だけでなく，キレート形成の妨害成分となっていた供給水中の有機酸を除去し，高効率なホウ素除去性能を長期間保つことを可能とした。これにより，1 ppt（10－9 g/L）以下というホウ素濃度を極限にまで抑えた超純水を，長期間安定的に製造することに成功した。
