Paroxysmal non-kinesigenic dyskinesia is a very rare movement disorder. Few cases have been reported in the literature so far. We present a 40-year-old man with non-kinesigenic paroxysmal dyskinesia, which was initially diagnosed as a psychogenic disorder. This case highlights the varied presentation of this condition and an excellent response to clonazepam.
Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a prevalent medical condition. With the advent of phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE-5) inhibitors, the treatment of ED has been revolutionized during the last two decades. Although there are great advances in the diagnosis and treatment of ED, there are two common controversial issues in our practice that merit further discussion. First, psychogenic or organic ED? This report describes the rare case of a 27-year-old female patient with conversion disorder who presented unilateral ptosis with ipsilateral muscle spasm of orbicular oculi. The co-existing of ptosis and muscle spasm of orbicular oculi indicates that, in accord with prior reports, the overactivity of orbicular oculi is essential in psychogenic pseudoptosis. The co-existing of unilateral ptosi...
Psychogenic (nonepileptic) seizures are among the most common and serious of all psychogenic neurological disorders. They account for approximately 20% of all intractable seizure disorders referred to comprehensive epilepsy centers and present with a reported annual incidence of approximately 4% that of true epilepsy. These events are serious and disabling. Indeed, compared with patients with t...
Psychogenic non-epileptic spells are a form of conversion disorder which is characterized by “seizure like episodes” often misdiagnosed as epilepsy. These are frequently seen in adults with female predominance but occur also in children. The gold standard, for a definitive diagnosis, is inpatient video-EEG monitoring in a specialized epilepsy monitoring unit to capture these episodes. There is ...
We describe two patients with psychogenic seizures of rare semiology. Both patients (a 23-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman) attended the emergency department because status epilepticus with myoclonic seizures had been diagnosed. Seizures were documented with video-electroencephalography. Semiology of seizures were brief myoclonia of both arms resulting in a short elevation of both arms with...
