BACKGROUND The trauma and injury severity score (TRISS) and Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation IV (APACHE IV) are accurate but complex. This study aimed to compare venous glucose, levels of serum lactate, and base deficit in polytraumatized patients as simple parameters to predict the mortality in these patients versus (TRISS) and (APACHE IV). METHODS This was a comparative cross-...

AIM To develop and assess the predictive capabilities of a statistical model that relates routinely collected Trauma Injury Severity Score (TRISS) variables to length of hospital stay (LOS) in survivors of traumatic injury. METHOD Retrospective cohort study of adults who sustained a serious traumatic injury, and who survived until discharge from Auckland City, Middlemore, Waikato, or North Sh...

INTRODUCTION Anatomic injury, physiological derangement, age, injury mechanism and pre-injury comorbidity are well-founded predictors of trauma outcome. Statistical prediction models may have poorer discrimination, calibration and accuracy when applied in new locations. We aimed to compare the TRISS, TARN and NORMIT survival prediction models in a Norwegian trauma population. METHODS Consecut...

Trauma and Injury Severity Score (TRISS) has been the benchmark of mortality risk in trauma centers for over 30 years. TRISS utilizes the Injury Severity Score (ISS) as an index of anatomical injury. This study investigated the efficacy of a new type of index of anatomical injury called the ICD-derived Injury Severity Score (ICISS) compared to the ISS using a logistic regression analysis and a ...

INTRODUCTION Whole-body computed tomography (CT) has gained importance in the early diagnostic phase of trauma care. However, the diagnostic value of CT for seriously injured patients is not thoroughly clarified. This study assessed whether preoperative CT beneficially affected survival of patients with blunt trauma who required emergency bleeding control. METHODS This retrospective study was...

AIM There is a clear lack of consensus on a validated definition of the term "polytrauma". This study presents and classifies the extent of injuries during wartime in Croatia using the Revised Trauma Score and Injury Severity Score (TRISS) and compares the scores with a clinical estimation based on subjective assessments of polytraumatised and non-polytraumatised patients. METHODS We analysed...

OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to compare the outcomes of adult (aged > 15 yr) blunt trauma patients with an Injury Severity Score (ISS) = 12 who were transported to a single tertiary trauma centre (TTC) by helicopter emergency medical service (HEMS) versus those transported by ground ambulance. METHODS We retrospectively analyzed all adult (aged > 15 yr) trauma patients between Marc...

The results of a quinquennial audit of trauma care in the Cambridge Military Hospital using the TRISS method is presented. 113 cases were analysed. The mean age was 32 years and the mean Injury Severity Score 16. Twenty-five deaths occurred of which 12 were potentially preventable. Means of reducing the number of preventable deaths are discussed.
