The conductor corona noise of four local 400 kV AC transmission lines is measured and compared to predictions. The prediction software developed is based on the EPRI semi-analytical approach using excitation functions and the theory of natural modes. The nature and accuracy of the prediction software is discussed along with relevant corona noise metrology issues encountered.
In the context of a semi-conductor based implementation of a quantum computer the idea of a quantum storage bit is presented and a possible implementation, using a double quantum dot structure, is considered. A measurement scheme using a stimulated Raman adiabatic passage is discussed.
In this article numerical methods used to model photonic devices are presented. In particular, the governing equations describing the problem, the coupling between electrical and optical fields, and the numerical algorithms used for computing solutions are discussed. As a computational example, we present the modeling of a semi-conductor optical amplifier employed as an all-optical demultiplexer.

Coulomb repulsion due to the surface charge on semi-conductor nanorods works against the dipole-dipole attraction that tends to direct the nanorods to self-assemble; the nature of this self-assembly for CdSe nanorods can be thus altered by pyridine washing, which charges the rods surface--thereby allowing the Coulomb repulsion to tailor the alignment.
