Magnesium alloys are promising candidates for biodegradable medical implants which reduce the necessity of second surgery to remove the implants. Yttrium in solid solution is an attractive alloying element because it improves mechanical properties and exhibits suitable corrosion properties. Silver was shown to have an antibacterial effect and can also enhance the mechanical properties of magnes...

Recent experiments on model catalysts have shown that Ag-Cu alloys have improved selectivity with respect to pure silver for ethylene epoxidation. In this paper we review our first-principles investigations on the (111) surface of this alloy and present new findings on other low index surfaces. We find that, for every surface orientation, the presence of oxygen leads to copper segregation to th...

This study examined the effect of alumina air-abrasion with different pressure on bonding between an acrylic resin and casting alloys. Disk specimens (8 and 10 mm in diameter) were cast from a silver-palladium-copper-gold (Ag-Pd-Cu-Au, Castwell M.C.12) alloy and a titanium-aluminum-niobium alloy (Ti-6Al-7Nb, T-Alloy Tough). The disks were air-abraded with alumina particles (50-70 microm) under ...

The simultaneous sputter deposition of gold and silver onto ionic liquids formed bimetallic alloy nanoparticles, which exhibited composition-sensitive surface plasmon resonance, the peak wavelength being red-shifted with an increase in the surface area of the gold foil targets sputtered.

Reducing the number of catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI) in the National Health Service (NHS) has the potential for large cost savings. This review identifies factors which affect the incidence rate of CAUTI, as well as the need for further studies investigating cost-effectiveness, particularly in the areas of silver alloy catheters and education.

An anti-galvanic replacement reaction (AGRR) of copper(II) ions reduced by ultra-small ssDNA-templated silver nanoclusters forming Ag-Cu alloy nanoparticles was observed. The reaction is against the classic galvanic theory and was monitored sensitively by the light-scattering technique.

This paper describes the design, manufacturing and characterization of newly developed mixed thick-/thin film thermoelectric microgenerators based on magnetron sputtered constantan (copper-nickel alloy) and screen-printed silver layers. The thermoelectric microgenerator consists of sixteen thermocouples made on a 34.2 × 27.5 × 0.25 mm³ alumina substrate. One of thermocouple arms was made of mag...

Implant-associated infections (IAIs) are a dreaded complication mainly caused by biofilm-forming staphylococci. Implant surfaces preventing microbial colonization would be desirable. We examined the preventive effect of a silver-coated titanium-aluminum-niobium (TiAlNb) alloy. The surface elicited a strong, inoculum-dependent activity againstStaphylococcus epidermidisandStaphylococcus aureusin ...

Three important considerations in the fabrication of customized cranio-maxillofacial prostheses are geometric precision, material strength, and biocompatibility. Three-dimensional printing (3DP) is a rapid part-fabrication process that can produce complex parts with high precision. The aim of this study was to design, synthesize by 3DP, and characterize a new Ti-5Ag (wt%) alloy. Silver nitrate ...

In this work TiNi-based nanocrystalline alloys and composite were produced by mechanical alloying process with subsequent annealing at 750 ◦C for 0.5 h. Mechanical alloying was performed in a SPEX 8000 Mixer Mill. TiNi alloy was chemically modi ed by Ag elemental powder. Silver content equaled 5 wt%. X-ray di raction analyses revealed formation of TiNi main phase after annealing. Additionally, ...
