Recent work shows a correlation between chiral asymmetry in non-terrestrial amino acids extracted from the Murchison meteorite and the presence of hydrous mineral phases in the meteorite [D. P. Glavin and J. P. Dworkin, Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U. S. A., 2009, 106, 5487-5492]. This highlights the need for sensitive experimental tests of the interactions of amino acids with clay minerals together ...

The spacing effect describes the robust phenomenon whereby memory is enhanced when learning events are distributed, instead of being presented in succession. We investigated the effect of spacing on children's memory and category induction. Three-year-old children were presented with two tasks, a memory task and a category induction task. In the memory task, identical instances of an object wer...

Working with a pion mass mπ ≈ 150 MeV, we study ππ and Kπ scattering using two flavours of non-perturbatively improved Wilson fermions at a lattice spacing a ≈ 0.071 fm. Employing two lattice volumes with linear spatial extents of Ns = 48 and Ns = 64 points and moving frames, we extract the phase shifts for p-wave ππ and Kπ scattering near the ρ and K∗ resonances. Comparing our results to those...

A second virial theory is presented to study the influence of a slight flexibility on the nematic-smectic A transition in fluids of freely rotating hard rods. The spinodal is loc~ted by performing a bifurcation analysis of the equation describing the single-particle distribution function. A closed expression for the structure factor is also derived. The structure factor diverges at the spinodal...

Many scholars have argued that deliberate birth spacing may have played a role before and during the modern fertility transition. There are good historical and theoretical reasons for this view, but it has proved to be hard to demonstrate convincingly that birth intervals were in fact partly determined by attempts at deliberate fertility control. This paper suggests a method of securing evidenc...

We propose a mean-field method to calculate approximately the spacing distribution functions p((n))(s) in one-dimensional classical many-particle systems. We compare our method with two other commonly used methods, the independent interval approximation and the extended Wigner surmise. In our mean-field approach, p((n))(s) is calculated from a set of Langevin equations, which are decoupled by u...

OBJECTIVES This paper examines the effect of household crowding on inter-pregnancy spacing and its association with socioeconomic indicators, among parous mothers delivered in an urban environment. DESIGN Cross sectional survey. METHODS Sociodemographic data were obtained on 2466 parous women delivering at eight hospitals in Greater Beirut over a one year period. Statistical methodology com...
