Our objective was to demonstrate that ALS patients have sensory pathway involvement and that local cord atrophy reflects segmental lower motor neuron involvement. Twenty-nine ALS patients with spinal onset and twenty-one healthy controls were recruited. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), magnetization transfer and atrophy index were measured in the spinal cord, complemented with transcranial magne...

We evaluated the accuracy of estimating the volume of biological soft tissues from their three-dimensional (3D) computer wireframe models, reconstructed from histological data sets obtained from guinea-pig spinal cords. We compared quantification from two methods of three-dimensional surface reconstruction to standard quantitative techniques, Cavalieri method employing planimetry and point coun...

The spinothalamic tract, well known for its role in nociception, is the most frequently studied ascending pathway originating from the spinal cord. It is known that spinothalamic neurons are located in all segments of the spinal cord, but in most mammals the total number of spinothalamic neurons is not known. In three cats, after large wheat germ agglutinin-conjugated horseradish peroxidase inj...

Previous investigations from our laboratory show that up-regulation of neuronal nitric oxide synthase (NOS) following spinal cord injury (SCI) is injurious to the cord. Antiserum to dynorphin A (1-17) induces marked neuroprotection in our model of SCI, indicating an interaction between dynorphin and NOS regulation. The present investigation was undertaken to find out whether topical application...

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the forward shifting of cervical spinal cords in different segments of patients with Hirayama disease to determine whether the disease is self-limiting. METHODS This study was performed on 11 healthy subjects and 64 patients. According to the duration, the patients were divided into 5 groups (≤1 year, 1-2 years, 2-3 years, 3-4 years, and ≥ 4 years). Cervical magnetic res...

In fishes, undulatory swimming is produced by sets of spinal interneurons constituting a central pattern generator (CPG). The CPG generates waves of muscle activity that travel from head to tail, which then bend the body into wave shapes that also travel from head to tail. In many fishes, the wavelengths of the neural and mechanical waves are different, resulting in a rostral-to-caudal gradient...

The feasibility of functional MRI of the spinal cord was investigated by carrying out blood oxygen-level dependent (BOLD) imaging of the human cervical spinal cord at a field of 3 T. BOLD imaging of the cervical spinal cord showed an average intensity increase of 7.0% during repeated exercise with the dominant hand with a return to baseline during rest periods. The areas of activation were pred...

A case of combined multiple sclerosis and demyelinating neuropathy is presented. Percutaneous electrical stimulation of the cortex and spinal cord has shown that pyramidal tract conduction time was prolonged and conduction velocity in the cord was 4 m/s. Motor conduction velocity in proximal segments of peripheral nerves was slowed to the same extent as in distal segments.

OBJECTIVE We report magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings on focal anterior displacement of the thoracic spinal cord in asymptomatic patients without a spinal cord herniation or intradural mass. MATERIALS AND METHODS We identified 12 patients (male:female = 6:6; mean age, 51.7; range, 15-83 years) between 2007 and 2011, with focal anterior displacement of the spinal cord and without evide...

Gap junctional communication in the adult CNS plays an important role in the synchronization of neuronal activities. In vitro studies have shown evidence of electrotonic coupling through gap junctions between sympathetic preganglionic motoneurons and between somatic motoneurons in the neonatal and adult rat spinal cord. Electrotonic transmission of membrane oscillations might be an important me...
