The pattern of variation of certain vertebral measurements along the vertebral column is known to differ in man and mouse. This paper investigates changes in this pattern in 7 species of small mammals and attempts to correlate them with locomotor adaptations and limb dimensions.
We report the discovery of light organs (photophores) adjacent to the dorsal defensive spines of a small deep-sea lanternshark (Etmopterus spinax). Using a visual modeling based on in vivo luminescence recordings we show that this unusual light display would be detectable by the shark's potential predators from several meters away. We also demonstrate that the luminescence from the spine-associ...
The purpose of this study is to test the hypothesis that the upper cervical spine is weaker than the lower cervical spine in pure flexion and extension bending, which may explain the propensity for upper cervical spine injuries in airbag deployments. An additional objective is to evaluate the relative strength and flexibility of the upper and lower cervical spine in an effort to better understa...
OBJECTIVE To provide an entry-level, new technology reliability assessment of the PulStar computer-assisted, differential compliance spinal instrument. SUBJECTS Eighteen college students (9 male and 9 female) were recruited by announcements and personal contacts. METHODS Following approval of the consent process by the Institutional Review Board of Mississippi State University, a PulStar Fu...
conclusions although spinopelvic fracture dislocation injuries are severe high-energy entities, in cases with traumatic spondylolytic spondylolisthesis due to widening of the vertebral canal, neurologic deficit may not be seen at all. case presentation we described a 16-year-old girl with extremely severe axial trauma to the lumbosacral spine who presented with fracture dislocation of the lumbo...
introduction spinal cord injury without radiological abnormality (sciwora) is a rare entity and usually involves the cervical spine. thoracic spine involvement is very rare due to the stability provided by the rib cage. the mechanisms of injury and pathophysiology are still debatable. case presentation we present a case of an adult male who had road traffic accident and presented with paraplegi...
STUDY DESIGN Radiographic evaluation of cadaveric cervical spine specimens. OBJECTIVE Assess reliability and reproducibility of foraminal dimensions obtained from cervical radiographs of varying obliquity and determine optimal angles for visualizing foramina at each cervical spine level. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA Oblique radiographs may be considered to assess cervical foraminal dimensions...
Introduction. Radical surgical resections in the treatment of malignant tumors spine have proven effective improving both overall and disease-free survival patients. Indications for such interventions are primary spine, benign with aggressive growth, solitary metastatic lesions patients a favorable oncological prognosis. Due to anatomical features vertebral column, it is very difficult perform ...
BACKGROUND This study was designed to reevaluate the effectiveness of the Pavlov ratio in patients with cervical myelopathy. METHODS We studied 107 patients who underwent open door laminoplasty for the treatment of cervical myelopathy between the C3 to C7 levels. We determined the Pavlov ratio on preoperative and postoperative cervical spine lateral radiographs, the vertebral body-to-canal ra...
