The possible transmission of Strongyloides stercoralis from men who had been infected for many years to their wives was investigated. None of the 24 wives was infected, as indicated by the absence of anti-Strongyloides antibodies in their serum. Thus, the risk of transmission from husband to wife seems small, although the likelihood among homosexuals is greater.
A case is reported of hyperinfection syndrome with Strongyloides stercoralis, with symptoms, signs and radiological appearances which led to a diagnosis of duodenal ulcer.
Two cases of Strongyloides stercoralis hyperinfestation syndrome accompanied by Gram negative bacteraemia and meningitis were studied. Both occurred in non-immunosuppressed West Indian women.
We experienced a case of hyperinfection with strongyloides stercoralis in a 64-year-old housewife who complained of severe epigastric pain associated with nausea, vomiting and general weakness for the period of one month. She received corticosteroid therapy for several months because of arthritis prior to admission. The diagnosis was confirmed by examination of gastroduodenal juice and gastrofi...
This commentary discusses our current understanding about Strongyloides stercoralis prevalence rates in the United States (USA) in the context of healthcare delivery to immigrants from Latin America. A literature search reveals that while prevalence rates in Latin American countries are not well documented, the rates in Latin American immigrants living in the USA are even less well known. This ...
Strongyloidiasis is a much-neglected soil born helminthiasis caused by the nematode Strongyloides stercoralis. Human derived S. stercoralis can be maintained in dogs in the laboratory and this parasite has been reported to also occur in dogs in the wild. Some authors have considered strongyloidiasis a zoonotic disease while others have argued that the two hosts carry host specialized population...
Infection by Strongyloides stercoralis can cause asthma-like symptoms through mechanisms that have not yet been clarified. A 55-year-old male farm worker with a 2-year history of illness diagnosed as asthma and treated unsuccessfully with bronchodilators and corticosteroids was referred to our hospital with severe dyspnea. The initial chest radiograph showed mild air trapping, and pulmonary fun...
Parasitic infection still surprises us with amazing case presentation every now and then. Intestinal nematode is a worldwide health problem especially in humid hot areas. Strongyloides stercoralis (S. stercoralis) is common soil- transmitted tropics subtropics. Its severity ranges from asymptomatic immunocompetent patients to hyperinfection even disseminated immunocompromised patients. He...
We report the first case of mixed pulmonary infection with Strongyloides stercoralis and Blastomyces dermatitidis. Histopathology from the lung biopsy showed structures consistent with B. dermatitidis and S. stercoralis. A parasitology exam from a bronchi alveolar lavage yielded an immature rhabditiform larva and female worm. Fungal cultures grew B. dermatitidis.
