Let f : X → Y be a perfect n-dimensional surjective map of paracompact spaces and Y a C-space. We consider the following property of continuous maps g : X → Ik = [0, 1], where 1 ≤ k ≤ ω: each g(f(y)), y ∈ Y , is at most n-dimensional. It is shown that all maps g ∈ C(X, In+1) with the above property form a dense Gδ-set in the function space C(X, I n+1 ) equipped with the source limitation topolo...

For a compact monotonically normal space X we prove: (1) X has a dense set of points with a well-ordered neighborhood base (and so X is co-absolute with a compact orderable space); (2) each point of X has a well-ordered neighborhood πbase (answering a question of Arhangel’skii); (3) X is hereditarily paracompact iff X has countable tightness. In the process we introduce weak-tightness, a notion...

Using results announced by Stevo Todorcevic we establish that if it is consistent that there is a supercompact cardinal then it is consistent that every locally compact perfectly normal space is paracompact. Modulo the large cardinal, this answers a question of S. Watson. We also solve a problem raised by the second author, proving that it is consistent with ZFC that every first countable hered...

In this paper we study an example-machine Bush(S, T ) where S and T are disjoint dense subsets of R. We find some topological properties that Bush(S, T ) always has, others that it never has, and still others that Bush(S, T ) might or might not have, depending upon the choice of the disjoint dense sets S and T . For example, we show that every Bush(S, T ) has a point-countable base, is heredita...

We show that it is consistent with ZF that there is a dense-in-itself compact metric space (X, d) which has the countable chain condition (ccc), but X is neither separable nor second countable. It is also shown that X has an open dense subspace which is not paracompact and that in ZF the Principle of Dependent Choice, DC, does not imply the disjoint union of metrizable spaces is normal .

In this paper we examine the role of the β-space property (equivalently of the MCM-property) in generalized ordered (GO-)spaces and, more generally, in monotonically normal spaces. We show that a GO-space is metrizable iff it is a β-space with a Gδ-diagonal and iff it is a quasidevelopable β-space. That last assertion is a corollary of a general theorem that any β-space with a σ-point-finite ba...

In this paper we give a new description of the shape of paracompact spaces. We introduce the intrinsic notion of an approximate net between two spaces and we prove that two paracompacta have the same shape if and only if they are isomorphic objects in the category HANp whose objects are paracompact spaces and whose morphisms are homotopy classes of approximate nets.
