The use of tantalum as biomaterial for orthopedic applications is gaining considerable attention in the clinical practice because it presents an excellent chemical stability, body fluid resistance, biocompatibility, and it is more osteoconductive than titanium or cobalt-chromium alloys. Nonetheless, metallic biomaterials are commonly bioinert and may not provide fast and long-lasting interactio...

Single crystalline microcubes of a new tantalum compound, tantalum oxychloride (TaO2.18Cl0.64), have been fabricated hydrothermally in a concentrated aqueous solution of hydrochloric acid and acetic acid. They contain a superstructure and exhibit remarkably enhanced photocatalytic activities for hydrogen production due to the improved light harvest and facilitated charge transport.

Element 73 was first extracted from mineral samples and described in 1802 by the Swedish chemist Anders Ekeberg. He chose the name tantalum because “when placed in the midst of acids it is incapable of taking any of them up and saturating itself with them”, in a manner reminiscent of the Greek mythological king Tantalus (pictured) who couldn’t eat or drink anything despite being surrounded by f...

DIS. CHEST, VOL. 56, NO. 1, JULY 1969 FIGURE 3 (upper). Histologic section from right lower lobe of an animal sacrificed immediately after hronchography. Tantalum particles are seen in the lumen of the secondary bronchus. FIGURE 4 (lower). This histologic section from the right lower lobe of a dog sacrificed 24 hours after tantalum bronchography shows no evidence of the heavy metal in the airwa...

To develop an effective process for tantalum powder production, a new preform reduction process (PRP) based on the magnesiothermic reduction of feed preform containing tantalum oxide (Ta2O5) was investigated. The feed preformwas fabricated from slurry, which was made by mixing Ta2O5 powder, flux (e.g., CaCl2), and binder. Various compositions of preform in the form of plates were prepared using...

Niobium and tantalum carbide clusters have been isolated in the gas phase and irradiated with intense tunable infrared (IR) light. Stable neutral clusters are selectively ionized and subsequently detected in a mass spectrometer. By tuning the IR frequency, infrared multiphoton absorption spectra are obtained for a whole range of clusters. These mass-selective IR spectra lead to insights into th...

Ta2O5 nanoparticles have been synthesized from alkoxy carboxylates of tantalum via the sol-gel route. Tantalum alkoxides were reacted with chlorocarboxylic acids in order to lower the susceptibility hydrolysis. When these modified alkoxy carboxylates were used in the sol-gel synthesis, they yielded Ta2O5 nanoparticles of better properties than those of the alkoxide-derived Ta2O5 nanoparticles. ...
