We measured the surface temperature of the tumors in 27 patients with primary lung cancer, using a flexible bronchofiberscope and a thermometer made from chromel-constantan. The thermometer was inserted into the aspiration channel of the bronchoflberscope, and temperature was studied under bronchofiberscopic observation. The surface temperatures of the tumors located in the central portion of t...

BACKGROUND Measuring rectal temperature in children is the gold standard, but ear or forehead measures are less traumatic and faster. The quality of non-invasive devices has improved but concerns remain whether they are reliable enough to substitute rectal thermometers. The aim was to evaluate in a real-life children population whether the forehead or ear temperature measurements could be used ...

Identification of people who have a fever in public places during the occurrence of emerging infectious diseases is essential for controlling disease spread. The measurement of body temperature could identify infected persons. The environment affects body temperature, but little is known about the validity of measurements under different thermal environments. Therefore, the aim of this study wa...

Three neonates with rectal perforations probably caused by the use of the rectal thermometer, are reported. The dangers of this condition and the difficulty of diagnosis even at laporatomy are emphasised. It is suggested that since the axillary temperature in the neonate is an adequate reflection of the core temperature the routine use of the rectal thermometer, except in exceptional circumstan...

Blackbodies are commonly used as a transfer medium in the calibration of radiation thermometers. The ideal blackbody is perfectly isothermal and has an emissivity of precisely 1 at all wavelengths. However, no real material has an emissivity as high as 1, so practical blackbodies are created by forming a cavity, made to be as isothermal as possible, inside a material with a relatively high intr...

Axillary temperatures recorded with a disposable chemical thermometer (DCT) measured a mean 0.29 degrees C higher than a mercury in glass thermometer (MGT) but differences could be wide. Differences between the same methods were however also wide. The DCT is safe and easy to use. Provided the higher readings are taken into consideration it is a suitable alternative to the MGT.

This paper explores some algorithms for automatic quantization of real-valued datasets using thermometer codes for pattern classiication applications. Experimental results indicate that a relatively simple randomized thermometer code generation technique can result in quantized datasets that when used to train simple perceptrons, can yield generalization on test data that is substantially bette...
