Thromboembolic disorders are among the major causes of morbidity and mortality, and anticoagulation remains the cornerstone of prevention and treatment of these disorders. Although effective, the well-established agents have significant drawbacks. Heparin, low molecular weight heparin, and fondaparinux must be given parenterally, which is inconvenient for long-term or home use. The orally admin...

Venous thromboembolic disorders (VTE) are serious disorders with high morbidity and mortality rates. Many genetic and acquired risk factors were identified to cause VTE. The most common genetic risk factor is Factor V Leiden mutation (FVL). FVL was found in high percentage of populations of Caucasian origin but was almost absent in non-Caucasians. It was also reported in populations living in N...

Heparins and vitamin K antagonists have been the cornerstones of anticoagulation therapy for several decades. Although they are very effective at inhibiting the coagulation process, they have several practical limitations. This was a challenge for the development of therapies that will overcome these drawbacks while matching the efficacy of the two classes of anticoagulants. Advances were achie...

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is often difficult to diagnose and many different disorders may result in elevated pulmonary arterial pressure requiring therapy. Left untreated, PH usually has a dismal prognosis culminating in right ventricular failure and death. Besides conservative therapeutic strategies such as anticoagulation and diuretics, the past decade has brought remarkable improvements in...
