A probabilistic interpretation of a modified Gegenbauer polynomial is furnished by its expression in terms of a combinatorial probability defined on a compound urn model. Also, a combinatorial interpretation of its coefficients is provided. In particular, probabilistic interpretations of a modified Chebyshev polynomial of the second kind and a modified Legendre polynomial together with combinat...

We consider a fourth-order eigenvalue problem on a semi-infinite strip which arises in the study of viscoelastic shear flow. The eigenvalues and eigenfunctions are computed by a spectral method involving Laguerre functions and Legendre polynomials.

‎In this paper‎, ‎we introduce the two-dimensional Legendre wavelets (2D-LWs)‎, ‎and develop them for solving a class of two-dimensional integro-differential equations (2D-IDEs) of fractional order‎. ‎We also investigate convergence of the method‎. ‎Finally‎, ‎we give some illustrative examples to demonstrate the validity and efficiency of the method.

An incompressible variational ideal ballooning mode equation is discretized with the COOL finite element discretization scheme using basis functions composed of variable order Legendre polynomials. This reduces the second order ordinary differential equation to a special block pentadiagonal matrix equation that is solved using an inverse vector iteration method. A benchmark test of BECOOL (Ball...

Gauss–Legendre quadrature rules are of considerable theoretical and practical interest because of their role in numerical integration and interpolation. In this paper, a series expansion for the zeros of the Legendre polynomials is constructed. In addition, a series expansion useful for the computation of the Gauss–Legendre weights is derived. Together, these two expansions provide a practical ...

—An explicit formula for the Fourier coef cients of the Legendre polynomials can be found in the Bateman Manuscript Project. However, formulas for more general classes of orthogonal polynomials do not appear to have been worked out. Here we derive explicit formulas for the Fourier series of Gegenbauer, Jacobi, Laguerre and Hermite polynomials. The methods described here apply in principle to an...

We construct an n-dimensional polytope whose boundary complex is compressed and whose face numbers for any pulling triangulation are the coefficients of the powers of (x − 1)/2 in the n-th Legendre polynomial. We show that the non-central Delannoy numbers count all faces in the lexicographic pulling triangulation that contain a point in a given open generalized orthant. We thus provide a geomet...

A eecient parallel multilevel algorithm is developed for solving the transport equations on parallel computers for one-dimensional anisotropic scattering. The parallel algorithm is developed by using a multigrid in angle scheme that is known to attenuate both rapidly and slowly varying errors in angle. The spatial discretization scheme used is the modiied linear discontinu-ous nite element meth...

in this paper, we give some characterizations for legendre spherical, legendre normal and legendre rectifying curves in the 3-dimensional sasakian space. furthermore, we show that legendre spherical curves are also legendre normal curves. in particular, we prove that the inverse of curvature of a legendre rectifying curve is a non-constant linear function of the arclength parameter.
