In my doctoral project it is argued that, beside the role of institutional contexts, social influence is crucial to explain the differences in the rapid and uneven rise in cohabitation through Europe in the last decades. The social influence focussed here upon is linked to the changing level of ongoing practice in each country through time. Two contextual mechanisms that are likely to convey th...

Frustration of magnetic systems which is caused by competing interactions is the driving force of several unusual phenomena such as plateaus and jumps of the magnetization curve as well as of unusual energy spectra with for instance many singlet levels below the first triplet state. The antiferromagnetic cuboctahedron can serve as a paradigmatic example of certain frustrated antiferromagnets. I...

In cases of alleged hauntings, a large number of seemingly trustworthy witnesses consistently report experiencing unusual phenomena (e.g. apparitions, sudden changes in temperature, a strong sense of presence) in certain locations. The two studies reported here explored the psychological mechanisms that underlie this apparent evidence of 'ghostly' activity. The experiments took place at two loc...

SMART syndrome (stroke like migraine attacks after radiation) has been described as a late delayed side effect of cerebral irradiation and comprises prolonged, unilateral, neurological symptoms with transient, cortical gadolinium enhancement sometimes punctuated by seizures and ipsilateral EEG slowing [1]. Here we describe a patient with non-convulsive status epilepticus with prominent negative...

We describe an unusual data set of thousands of annotated images with interesting sense phenomena. Natural language image sense annotation involves increased semantic complexities compared to disambiguating word senses when annotating text. These issues are discussed and illustrated, including the distinction between word senses and iconographic senses.

We consider a spatially distributed population dynamics model with excitable predator-prey kinetics, where species propagate in space due to their taxis with respect to each other's gradient in addition to, or instead of, their diffusive spread. Earlier, we have described new phenomena in this model in one spatial dimension, not found in analogous systems without taxis: reflecting and self-spli...
