Ureaplasma urealyticum was detected in the cervix of 49·9% and in the urine of 47·7% of women attending a department of genitourinary medicine. Isolation of U urealyticum was not related to diagnosis, nor was there any association between the presence of the organism and any symptoms or signs of genital tract disease. Fewer organisms were detected in the cervix of women who had a concurrent inf...

A study of four conjugal partnerships is described in which the male partners presented with persistent or recurrent non-gonococcal, non-chlamydial, but ureaplasma positive urethritis. Resolution of symptoms and signs in the male partners was achieved only after treatment to eliminate Ureaplasma urealyticum from both partners.

Two separate species of Ureaplasma have been identified that infect humans: Ureaplasma parvum and Ureaplasma urealyticum. Most notably, these bacteria lack a cell wall and are the leading infectious organism associated with infection-related induction of preterm birth. Fourteen separate representative prototype bacterial strains, called serovars, are largely differentiated by the sequence of re...

OBJECTIVES The aim of this work was to study the ability of clinical isolates of Ureaplasma spp. to form biofilms in vitro and to compare the antibiotic susceptibility of sessile cells and their planktonic counterparts. METHODS A total of nine Ureaplasma spp. isolates recovered from unrelated male patients diagnosed with urethritis or chronic prostatitis and two isolates isolated from the uri...

Ureaplasma species are the most frequently isolated microorganisms inside the amniotic cavity and have been associated with spontaneous abortion, chorioamnionitis, premature rupture of the membranes (PROM), preterm labour (PL) pneumonia in neonates and bronchopulmonary dysplasia in neonates. The mechanisms by which Ureaplasmas cause such diseases remain unclear, but it is believed that inapprop...

Recent studies show an association between the presence of Ureaplasma urealyticum in tracheal aspirates and bronchopulmonary dysplasia. We hypothesized that among infants with birth weights < or = 1,250 g and respiratory disease, those with U. urealyticum in their tracheal aspirates would have radiographic evidence of more-severe pulmonary disease more often than would those without this organi...

females abortion is one of the most important sequela of genital infection with chlamydia trachomatis, mycoplasma hominis and ureaplasma urealyticum.in this study frequency of chlamydia trachomatis, mycoplasma hominis and ureaplasma urealyticum was studied in 125 females with habitual abortion by direct and indirect immunofluorescence tests and culture method and compared with 250 normal popula...

The incidence of Ureaplasma urealyticum in endourethral swabs was compared with that in first voided urine specimens from 171 male patients. The organism was isolated from the urethras of 72 (42%) and from the urine of 66 (39%). The interval since last voiding urine did not significantly influence the incidence of infection or ureaplasma counts in either type of specimen. Urethritis was strongl...

We evaluated a previously described quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) for quantifying and differentiating Ureaplasma parvum and U. urealyticum. Because of nonspecific reactions with Staphylococcus aureus DNA in the U. parvum PCR, we developed a modified qPCR and designed new primers. These oligonucleotides eradicated cross-reactions, indicating higher specificity. The detection limits of the qP...
