A comprehensive and global sensitivity analysis was conducted under a range of operating conditions. The relative importance of mass transfer resistance versus kinetic parameters was studied and found to depend on the operating regime as follows: Operating under the optimal loading ratio of 1.90(gO(2)/m(3)/d)/(gN/m(3)/d), the system was influenced by mass transfer (10% impact on nitrogen remova...

Heavy metals (HMs) are common components of landfill leachates and piggery wastewater, which correspond with possible applications of the anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox). For this reason, the study of the fate and effect of HMs on the anammox process is of utmost importance. In this work, the effect of several HMs on the specific anammox activity (SAA) was studied. For this purpose, the ...

Settlement ponds are used to treat aquaculture discharge water by removing nutrients through physical (settling) and biological (microbial transformation) processes. Nutrient removal through settling has been quantified, however, the occurrence of, and potential for microbial nitrogen (N) removal is largely unknown in these systems. Therefore, isotope tracer techniques were used to measure pote...

From discovery in the early 1990s to completion of full-scale anammox reactor, it took almost two decades to uncover the secret veil of anammox bacteria. There were three milestones during the commercialization of anammox: the development of the first enrichment culture medium, the completion of the first commercial anammox reactor, and the fast start-up of full-scale anammox plant. Till now, t...

Various fractions were extracted from cell-wall material of Eupenicillium crustaceum, Penicillium brevi-compactum, P. decumbens, Aspergillus flavipes and A. ochraceus. The most characteristic fractions, which may have chemotaxonomic relevance, were F1I, an alpha-(1-3) glucan (alkalisoluble, water-insoluble), which amounted to 16.2-32.5% of the cell-wall material, and F1S (alkali and water-solub...

UNLABELLED Gastric banding is an established and effective form of weightloss surgery. Semi-structured interviews explored the experiences of gastric banding of twenty purposively recruited patients one year after surgery. Data was analysed using thematic analysis. RESULTS Three themes emerged. They included 'Exercising choice' (restriction by the band was counterbalanced by new food-related ...

In most cases, the anammox process is used for nitrogen removal from reject water coming from dewatering of digested sludge. However, there are more industrial streams suitable for treatment by partial nitritation/anammox process. The landfill leachate may be a good example of such wastewater. Generally, landfilling is the most used solution for treatment of urban solid wastes. The problem with...

In the past few decades, laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding is one of the most common bariatric procedures performed to treat morbid obesity. Device-related complication such as connection-tubing problem is rare. Here we present a case of gastric band tubing complication during pregnancy. This case illustrates the need to maintain high index of suspicion of gastric band device-related comp...

Anammox coupling with nitrate reduction under various electron donors was studied using sludge acclimatized to have anammox and denitrification activities. Due to a deficiency in electron donors for NO(3)(-) reduction, anammox activity in an inorganic medium containing NO(3)(-) and NH(4)(+) was lower than that in NO(2)(-) and NH(4)(+). Anammox could use NO(2)(-) competitively against denitrifie...

Samples from six depths of the Black Sea's suboxic zone were analyzed for 16S rRNA gene sequence information. A gradient in phylotype diversity was found. The distributions of known anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) bacteria, many unknown Planctomycetes, and other phylotypes were examined in relation to the local nutrient and redox conditions.
