We briefly review recent developments in black hole accretion disk theory, placing new emphasis on the vital role played by magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) stresses in transporting angular momentum. The apparent universality of accretion-related outflow phenomena is a strong indicator that vertical transport of angular momentum by large-scale MHD torques is important and may even dominate radial tran...

We briefly review recent developments in black hole accretion disk theory, emphasizing the vital role played by magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) stresses in transporting angular momentum. The apparent universality of accretion-related outflow phenomena is a strong indicator that large-scale MHD torques facilitate vertical transport of angular momentum. This leads to an enhanced overall rate of angular...

A photoelectron spectroscopy study of the anionic model chromophore of the green fluorescent protein is presented. From the photoelectron spectra taken at 3.496 eV, 4.62 eV, and 6.15 eV the vertical and adiabatic detachment energies are determined to be 2.8 ± 0.1 eV and 2.6 ± 0.2 eV, respectively. The vertical detachment energy is higher than the S1← S0 absorption maximum (2.57 eV) and indicate...

We study level mixing in the single particle energy spectrum of one of the constituent quantum dots in a vertical double quantum dot by performing magneto-resonant-tunneling spectroscopy. The device used in this study differs from previous vertical double quantum dot devices in that the single side gate is now split into four separate gates. Because of the presence of natural perturbations caus...

Uniqueness in the linearised water-wave problem is considered for a fluid layer of constant depth containing two, three or four vertical barriers. The barriers are parallel, of infinite length in a horizontal direction, and may be surface-piercing and/or bottom mounted and may have gaps. The case of oblique wave incidence is included in the theory. A solution for a particular geometry is unique...

A new method which we refer to as vertical Franck-Condon is proposed to calculate electronic absorption spectra of polyatomic molecules. In accord with the short-time picture of spectroscopy, the excited-state potential energy surface is expanded at the ground-state equilibrium geometry and the focus of the approach is more on the overall shape of the spectrum and the positions of the band maxi...

We present a theory predicting the high-frequency-high-wavenumber part of the spectral energy density of internal waves in the ocean. The theory is based on the wave turbulence formalism applied to a natural Hamiltonian description for the internal wave field. We show that stationary energy spectra form a family of statistically steady state scale invariant solutions. Remarkably, the high-frequ...

PURPOSE To evaluate and compare the observers' ability to measure simulations of cup/disc ratios (CDR) as concentric and non-concentric circles. METHODS In a prospective, random, and masked setting, 43 images representing the CDR spectrum from 0.2 to 0.9 for vertical and horizontal CDR measurements were developed and presented on a computer screen to 171 participants. RESULTS There were sat...

Self potential (SP) method is a passive method that involves measurements of naturally occurring potentials, commonly associated with the weathering of sulfides ore bodies. Energy spectrum (power spectrum) method developed primarily for gravity and magnetic data have been adapted to electrical SP data. In case of SP data analysis, energy is taken as the square of the Fourier amplitude spectrum ...

Accelerometers, which can be installed inside a floating platform on the sea, are among the most commonly used sensors for operational ocean wave measurements. To examine the non-stationary features of ocean waves, this study was conducted to derive a wavelet spectrum of ocean waves and to synthesize sea surface elevations from vertical acceleration signals of a wave buoy through the continuous...
