The effects of salts on the solubility of amphiphilic organic molecules are of importance to numerous atmospheric, environmental, and biological systems. A detailed picture of the influence of dissolved atmospheric salts, NaCl and Na(2)SO(4), on the adsorption of hexanoic acid at the vapor/water interface is developed using vibrational sum-frequency spectroscopy and surface tension measurements...

Experimental data for water adsorption on CVD (chemical vapor deposition) graphene/SiO2 and graphene/Cu studied under ultra-high vacuum (UHV) conditions are discussed, focusing on support effects and hydrophobicity. Under UHV, it seems that graphene wettability is inversely related to wetting properties of the support. Graphene is not transparent to water wetting on the supports studied here.

The effect of post-treatment upon the H₂O adsorption performance of biomass-based carbons was studied under post-combustion CO₂ capture conditions. Oxygen surface functionalities were partially replaced through heat treatment, acid washing, and wet impregnation with amines. The surface chemistry of the final carbon is strongly affected by the type of post-treatment: acid treatment introduces a ...

Ceria (CeO2 ) supports are unique in their ability to trap ionic platinum (Pt), providing exceptional stability for isolated single atoms of Pt. The reactivity and stability of single-atom Pt species was explored for the industrially important light alkane dehydrogenation reaction. The single-atom Pt/CeO2 catalysts are stable during propane dehydrogenation, but are not selective for propylene. ...

Anomalous liquid behavior is viewed as a result of an increase in surface tension in isolated capillaries. Using a derived prime equation for this change several phenomena are treated including the strength of liquid bridges between solids, the lowering of vapor pressure, increased solubility, and adsorption-desorption hysteresis. Using experimental data available on thestrengthofliquid bridges...

We present here the behavior of the resonance frequency of porous anodic alumina cantilever arrays during water vapor adsorption and emphasize their possible use in the micromechanical sensing of humidity levels at least in the range of 10-22%. The sensitivity of porous anodic aluminium oxide cantilevers (Δf/Δm) and the humidity sensitivity equal about 56 Hz/pg and about 100 Hz/%, respectively....

Nucleation rate measurements of water in the presence of nitrogen as a carrier gas are reported at total pressures near 10, 25, and 40 bar, and temperatures of 230 and 250 K. The results were obtained using our pulse-expansion wave tube, particularly suited for high pressure nucleation research. Enhanced fugacity of water vapor in the mixture, due to the presence of nitrogen, was quantitatively...

Our quantitative understanding of water adsorption onto salt surfaces under ambient conditions is presently quite poor owing to the difficulties in directly characterizing this interfacial layer under these conditions. Here we determine the thickness of the interfacial layer on NaCl at different relative humidities (RH) based on a novel application of atomic force spectroscopy and capillary con...

The preparation of activated carbons from bean pods waste by chemical (K(2)CO(3)) and physical (water vapor) activation was investigated. The carbon prepared by chemical activation presented a more developed porous structure (surface area 1580 m(2) g(-1) and pore volume 0.809 cm(3) g(-1)) than the one obtained by water vapor activation (258 m(2) g(-1) and 0.206 cm(3) g(-1)). These carbons were ...

Thermal batteries based on a reversible adsorption/desorption of a working fluid (water, methanol, ammonia) rather than the conventional vapor compression is a promising alternative to exploit waste thermal energy for heat reallocation. In this context, there is an increasing interest to find novel porous solids able to adsorb a high energy density of working fluid under low relative vapor pres...
