The dispute over the extent of global poverty hinges mostly on the disparity between household surveys and the national accounts estimates. In this paper we use data from the provinces of China to document the extent of this disparity in a major contributor to global poverty. JEL Classification number: O1, C80.

This paper examines the determinants of China’s Olympic success by drawing on provincial-level data. We find that it is government spending on sports, rather than per capita income, that has the greatest impact on this success. Our findings suggest that government involvement is still the most fundamental feature of sports organization in China. JEL Classification: D2, H4, H7, O1, P5

In this paper, we use detailed trade and transactions data for the U.S. manufacturing sector to empirically analyze the direction and magnitude of the association between firm-level exposure to trade and the volatility of employment growth. We find that, relative to purely domestic firms, firms that only export and firms that both export and import are less volatile, whereas firms that only imp...

abstract in this paper, income per capita convergence hypothesis is tested in selected oic countries. for this purpose, we use the time series model and univariate kpss stationary test with multiple structural breaks (carrion-i-silvestre et al. (2005)) over the period 1950-2008. the results show that most oic countries could not catch up toward usa. although because of some positive term of tra...

Synthetic biology aspires to construct natural and non-natural pathways to useful compounds. However, pathways that rely on multiple promiscuous enzymes may branch, which might preclude selective production of the target compound. Here, we describe the assembly of a six-enzyme pathway in Escherichia coli for the synthesis of C50-astaxanthin, a non-natural purple carotenoid. We show that by judi...

Using quantile regression and a rich cross section data set for German manufacturing plants this paper documents that the impact of plant characteristics on export activities varies along the conditional size distribution of the export/sales ratio. For example, firm size is statistically significant at a conventional level for the 0.25 quantile only; branch plant status matters at the upper tai...

This paper is an empirical investigation of the evolutionary principle of ‘growth of the fitter’. Previous studies suggest that growth does not discriminate between firms according to their fitness, when this latter is proxied by productivity. We use the profit rate (operating surplus/value added) as a proxy for fitness and explore its influence on subsequent growth rates by tracking 8405 Frenc...

This paper investigates how the environmental pollution in East Asian countries can be affected by trade of ‘dirty’ goods with Japan and the USA. By controlling for trade openness, the share of manufacturing in GDP, and the trade of pollution-intensive products with Japan and the USA, CO2 emissions are estimated for ten East Asian countries between 1988 and 2000. Our results show that increasin...
