Alkaline proteases have biotechnological importance due to their activity and stability at alkaline pH. 56 bacteria, capable of growing under alkaline conditions were isolated and their alkaline protease activities were carried out at different parameters to determine their optimum alkaline protease production conditions. Seven isolates were showed higher alkaline protease production capacity t...

Clinical isolates that are difficult to identify by conventional means form a valuable source of novel human pathogens. We report on a 5-year study based on systematic 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. We found 60 previously unknown 16S rRNA sequences corresponding to potentially novel bacterial taxa. For 30 of 60 isolates, clinical relevance was evaluated; 18 of the 30 isolates analyzed were co...

Crenarchaeal 16S rRNA sequences constituted over 70% of the archaeal clones recovered from three salt marsh sites dominated by different grasses. Group I.1a Crenarchaeota dominated at two sites, while group I.3b Crenarchaeota sequences were most abundant at a third site. Abundances of 16S rRNA genes related to "Candidatus Nitrosopumilus maritimus" differed by site and sampling date.

Of 31 freshwater bacterial isolates screened using the Biolog MT2 assay to determine their metabolism of the microcystin LR, 10 were positive. Phylogenetic analysis (16S rRNA) identified them as Arthrobacter spp., Brevibacterium sp., and Rhodococcus sp. This is the first report of microcystin degraders that do not belong to the Proteobacteria.

A new approach for inserting a photo-label at a selected position within the long ribosomal RNA molecules has been developed. The Escherichia coli 16S rRNA was cleaved at a single internucleotide bond, 1141-1142, with RNase H in the presence of a complementary chimeric oligonucleotide. 4-Thiouridine 5', 3'-diphosphate was ligated to the 3'-end of the 5'fragment at the cleavage site with T4 RNA ...

teria and their relatives,” are a major class of bacteria (Gupta, 2000; Holt et al., 1994; Stackebrandt et al., 1988; Zinder, 1998). This group of predominantly Gram-negative bacteria contains more than 200 genera with a great diversity of phenotypic and physiological attributes. Proteobacteria have been classified based on homology of 16S ribosomal RNA or by hybridization of ribosomal RNA or D...

After mild trypsin treatment of a complex of ribosomal protein S4 and 16S RNA of Escherichia coli, a large homogeneous fragment of the S4 protein was protected against digestion by its RNA binding site. This fragment was isolated and characterised for molecular weight. It was able to rebind specifically to 16S RNA. Preliminary results indicate that protected protein fragments can also be obtain...

As a first step in reconstructing the phylogeny of world stag beetles (Coleoptera: Lucanidae), phylogenetic relationships among the major members of Japanese stag beetles were explored by analyzing a sequence of 1030 nucleotides from the mitochondrial 16S ribosomal RNA (16S rRNA) gene. A total of 20 species and three additional subspecies representing 13 genera were examined to provide basic in...

Leptospirosis, caused by pathogenic Leptospira, is one of the most important zoonoses in the world. Several molecular techniques have been developed for detection and differentiation between pathogenic and saprophytic Leptospira spp. The aim of this study was to develop a rapid and simple assay for specific detection and differentiation of pathogenic Leptospira spp. by multiplex real-time PCR (...
