anaplasma platys, previously known as ehrlichia platys, which causes infectious canine cyclic thrombocytopenia, has notbeen extensively studied in southeast asia. recent reports in theregion have been limited to ticks and dogs in thailand, and toticks in the philippines. in this report, dnafragments of a. platyswere molecularly detected in a dog in the philippines. apitbullpuppy exhibited pancyt...

Nine splenectomised calves were infested with dissimilar numbers of adult Boophilus microplus ticks 72 h after collection as engorged nymphs from three non splenectomised calves with different levels of Anaplasma marginale rickettsaemia. Successful transmission of A. marginale appeared to be more dependent on the level of rickettsaemia of the donor calves than on the number of ticks attaching t...

We examined the reservoir potential of white-tailed deer for Anaplasma phagocytophilum. Results suggest that white-tailed deer harbor a variant strain not associated with human infection, but contrary to published reports, white-tailed deer are not a reservoir for strains that cause human disease. These results will affect surveillance studies of vector and reservoir populations.

In this study blood samples were collected from 193 goats in north and northeastern Iran with the aim to develop a PCR-RFLP assay, as a specific and sensitive diagnostic tool enabling direct and concurrent identification of two Anaplasma species (A. ovis, A. marginale) in goats. A polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for amplification of a fragment of the major surface protein 4 (msp4) gene from A....

Anaplasmosis can be diagnosed either by immunological techniques or by direct microscopic examination of blood smears. Both methods are time-consuming and labour intensive. The use of DNA probes in an hybridization assay may simplify the diagnosis of anaplasmosis in cattle and sheep. A genomic DNA library of Anaplasma centrale was constructed in an expression vector and screened to detect clone...

A total of 93 Bos taurus cattle was used in pen trials to compare vaccine stocks of Anaplasma centrale from South Africa and Australia (which stock came from South Africa in 1934) in protecting against three virulent field isolates from clinical Anaplasma marginale infections. In addition, field observations were made on the use of a vaccine, prepared from the Australian stock, in over 9553 cat...

Continuous cell lines have been established from several ixodid and argasid tick species, representing an excellent tool suitable for the isolation of pathogens and their subsequent propagation, which in turn allows the production of antigenic material for diagnostic tests, antibody and vaccine production, and also for studies on host-vector-pathogen relationships. This paper reviews the use of...

Anaplasma phagocytophilum is a zoonotic tick-borne intracellular bacterium responsible for granulocytic anaplasmosis. As it is difficult to isolate and cultivate, only 20 A. phagocytophilum genomes have been sequenced to date. Here, we present eight A. phagocytophilum genome sequences obtained using alternative approaches based on sequence capture technology.

The presence of Anaplasma phagocytophilum, a tick-transmitted zoonotic pathogen, was investigated in Sardinia using a molecular approach. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that Sardinian strains are genetically distinct from the two lineages previously described in Europe and are closely related to strains isolated in different areas of the United States.

Zoonosis Update T he term ehrlichiosis has been broadly applied to a variety of diseases of humans and animals caused by pathogens formerly classified in the genus Ehrlichia. However, a recently proposed taxonomic reorganization 1 has recommended the reclassifications of some former Ehrlichia species under the genera Anaplasma and Neorickettsia and Cowdria ruminantium under the genus Ehrlichia....
