Proofreading text relies on stored knowledge, language processing, and attentional resources. Age differentially affects these constituent abilities: while older adults maintain word knowledge and most aspects of language comprehension, language production and attention capacity are impaired with age. Research with young adults demonstrates that proofreading is more attentionally-demanding for ...

The letter substitution errors of 2 dysgraphic subjects who, despite relatively intact oral spelling, made well-formed letter substitution errors in written spelling, were studied. Many of these errors bear a general physical similarity to the intended target. Analyses revealed that this similarity apparently was based on the features of the component strokes of letters rather than on visuospat...

Errors, even at the spelling level, can provide useful insight into the nature of a written text. This paper presents a classification of spelling errors in Web texts based on their causes (misspellings, typos and intentional deviations), linking them to the attitudes of their authors and the circumstances of their writing. Examples are drawn from blog and forum entries in English and Italian.

In this study we focused on the spelling of high-functioning students with dyslexia. We made a detailed classification of the errors in a word and sentence dictation task made by 100 students with dyslexia and 100 matched control students. All participants were in the first year of their bachelor's studies and had Dutch as mother tongue. Three main error categories were distinguished: phonologi...

Xuxen is a spelling checker/corrector for Basque which is going to be comercialized next year. The checker recognizes a word-form if a correct morphological breakdown is allowed. The morphological analysis is based on two-level morphology. The correction method distinguishes between orthographic errors and typographical errors. • Typographical errors (or misstypings) are uncognitive errors whic...

This article focuses on the evaluation of a novel algorithm for the detection of context-sensitive spelling errors. We present a fully automatic evaluation procedure with no requirements of manual work or resources annotated with spelling errors. The evaluation method is applicable to any language and tag set, and is easily adaptable to other NLP systems such as taggers and parsers.

: In this paper, we address the problem of detecting and correcting hidden spelling errors in Arabic texts. Hidden spelling errors are morphologically valid words and therefore they cannot be detected or corrected by conventional spell checking programs. In the work presented here, we investigate this kind of errors as they relate to the Arabic language. We start by proposing a classification o...

In the pursuit of a remedy for the poor spelling of dyslexic writers, a software system has been developed which features centrally a user model of the writer’s spelling error patterns. Dyslexic writers are poorly catered for by most spelling programs because of their diverse errors. In this system, Babel, a user model directs the search towards likely corrections considering the writer’s commo...

In this paper, we present a new approach dedicated to correcting the spelling errors of the Arabic language. This approach corrects typographical errors like inserting, deleting, and permutation. Our method is inspired from the Levenshtein algorithm, and allows a finer and better scheduling than Levenshtein. The results obtained are very satisfactory and encouraging, which shows the interest of...

The application of the formalism of two-level morphology to Basque and its use in the elaboration of the XUXEN spell ing checker/corrector are described. This application is intended to cover a large part of the language. Because Basque is a highly inflected language, the approach of spelling checking and correction has been conceived as a by-product of a general purpose morphological analyzer/...
