Introduction The development of laser diodes has increased the variety of practical applications for lasers as light sources in analytical spectroscopy. Lasers are excellent radiation sources due to their monochromaticity, good beam focusing capabilities, and small line-widths but have traditionally been expensive and difficult to operate, limiting their applications to specialized fields. Beca...

We have demonstrated nondestructive detection of cold atoms with a probe laser by a frequency-modulation spectroscopy technique. We were able to tune the probe laser and its sidebands far from atomic resonance to reduce the spontaneous emission to less than 0.2 photon per atom during detection.

Intermolecular carbon nanotube junctions were formed through amide linkage of amino functionalized multiwall carbon nanotubes and [Ru (dcbpy)(bpy)2](PF6)2, an inorganic metal complex. Nanotube interconnects were visualized using atomic force microscopy. Absorption and emission spectroscopy showed significant changes between starting products and the resulting ruthenium nanotube complex, indicat...

In the 1970’s, Albert Crewe demonstrated with scanning transmission electron microscopy that field emission sources allowed spectacular improvement (i.e., atomic resolution) in the field of electron microscopy [1]. Several groups in the USA, Great Britain, and France began to work on point ion sources in order to bring similar improvements to ion instruments, especially to secondary ion mass sp...

A weakly magnetized expanding hydrogen plasma, created by a cascaded arc, was investigated using optical emission spectroscopy. The emission of the expanding plasma is dominated by H{α} emission in the first part of the plasma expansion, after which a sharp transition to a blue afterglow is observed. The position of this sharp transition along the expansion axis depends on the magnetic field st...

Graphene nanosheets have been synthesized from commercial expandable graphite by heating in a microwave oven and dispersing in ethanol by ultrasonication. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy and electron energy-loss spectroscopy and atomic force microscope showed that the nanosheets were about 2 nm in thickness and 10 microm in diameter. The field emission of the graphene sheets has b...

We report on the observation of fast hydrogen atoms in a capacitively coupled RF reactor by optical emission spectroscopy. For the analysis we use the prominent H emission line of atomic hydrogen in combination with other lines from molecular hydrogen and argon. Several characteristic emission structures can be identified. One of these structures is related to fast hydrogen atoms traveling from...

Scanning electron microscopy, cathodoluminescence and secondary ion mass spectroscopy investigations are used to study an inter-link between structural quality, elements distribution and light emission properties of ZnO polyand monocrystalline lms grown by the atomic layer deposition. Cathodoluminescence and scanning electron microscopy investigations were performed at liquid helium temperature...

the effect of temperature variation on the growth of carbon nanotubes (cnts) using thermal chemical vapor deposition (tcvd) is presented. nickel and cobalt (ni-co) thin films on silicon (si) substrates were used as catalysts in tcvd technique. acetylene gas was used in cnts growth process at the controlled temperature ranges from 850-1000 ̊ c. catalysts and cnts characterization was carried out ...

Resonant Auger decay of core-excited molecules during ultrafast dissociation leads to a Doppler shift of the emitted electrons depending on the direction of the electron emission relative to the dissociation axis. We have investigated this process by angle-resolved electron-fragment ion coincidence spectroscopy. Electron energy spectra for selected emission angles for the electron relative to t...
