Cellular interactions involved in the pathogenesis of hypogammaglobulinemia were studied in six patients with common variable immunodeficiency. Amounts of immunoglobulin (Ig)G and IgM in the supernate of pokeweed mitogen-stimulated cocultures of normal and immunodeficient mononuclear cells were measured by radioimmunoassays. Mononuclear cells from three of six patients inhibited Ig production o...

This study demonstrates for the first time that vaccination with either autologous or heterologous dendritic cells (DC) pulsed with specific antigen induces protective immune responses against noninvasive bacteria, namely Bordetella pertussis. The DC-mediated protection is associated with strong B. pertussis-specific immunoglobulin G (IgG) and IgA responses in the lung.

A large number of CD4 + human T helper type 1 (Thl) clones specific for purified protein derivative and of Th2 clones specific for the excretory/secretory antigen of Toxocara canis, derived from the same individuals, were analyzed for both cytotoxic capacity and helper function for immunoglobulin (Ig) synthesis. The great majority of Thl, but only a minority of Th2 clones exhibited cytolytic ac...

A 56 year old woman with rheumatoid arthritis developed relapsing thrombocytopenia during successive treatments with aurothioglucose, sulphasalazine, and hydroxychloroquine. The presence of IgM or IgG antibodies or immune complexes reactive with autologous platelets could not be shown. Relapsing thrombocytopenia may indicate a genetically determined HLA-DR3 and B8 aberrant immunological respons...

Despite months of mucosal virus exposure, the majority of breastfed infants born to HIV-infected mothers do not become infected, raising the possibility that immune factors in milk inhibit mucosal transmission of HIV. HIV Envelope (Env)-specific antibodies are present in the milk of HIV-infected mothers, but little is known about their virus-specific functions. In this study, HIV Env-specific a...

Damaged or old erythrocytes are cleared rapidly from circulation. Because several common biochemical lesions can induce the clustering of integral membrane proteins, we have proposed that formation of microscopic protein aggregates in the membrane might constitute a cell surface marker that promotes removal of the defective/senescent cells. We demonstrate here that treatments that cluster integ...

Naturally occurring IgG autoantibody against Band 3 glycoprotein of human erythrocyte membrane (anti-Band 3) recognizes the erythrocytes modified with oxidizing or SH-blocking agents as well as senescent erythrocytes. Location of the antigenic determinants of Band 3 this autoantibody recognizes was investigated by competitive inhibition studies of the antibody binding to the modified cells. Aut...

There are limited data describing the functional characteristics of HIV-1 specific antibodies in breast milk (BM) and their role in breastfeeding transmission. The ability of BM antibodies to bind HIV-1 envelope, neutralize heterologous and autologous viruses and direct antibody-dependent cell cytotoxicity (ADCC) were analyzed in BM and plasma obtained soon after delivery from 10 non-transmitti...

BACKGROUND/AIM The closure of postoperative wounds is essential in order to prevent surgical site infections or wound dehiscence, mainly in oncological patients. We aimed to demonstrate the efficacy of autologous micrografts in the management of wound dehiscence in an oncology patient undergoing decompressive spinal laminectomy. CASE REPORT A 57-year-old man with IgG multiple myeloma and medu...

Warm autoimmune hemolytic anemia (WAIHA) is characterized by an accelerated clearance of red blood cells (RBCs) associated with the presence of anti-RBC immunoglobulin (Ig)G autoantibodies. In the present study, we analyzed the self-reactive IgG and IgM antibody repertoires of patients with WAIHA using a technique of quantitative immunoblotting on a panel of whole tissue extracts as sources of ...
