In addition to Ag recognition, some Abs are capable of killing target organisms in the absence of phagocytes and complement. In this study, we report that an anti-Pseudomonas aeruginosa O6ad LPS IgG(1), tobacco-expressed human S20 IgG(1) (te-hS20), as well as its recombinant Fab and single-chain variable fragment (scFv) fragments have cellular- and complement-independent bactericidal activity. ...

TD-6424, a rapidly bactericidal agent with multiple mechanisms of action, is more potent in vitro and more rapidly bactericidal than currently available agents against methicillin-susceptible and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. TD-6424 produces a postantibiotic effect with a duration of 4 to 6 h against these organisms. The results suggest potential efficacy against susceptible and...

X-ray fluorescence has been pointed out as a mechanism offering exceptional possibilities in the development of physicochemical therapy. Experiments are given which demonstrate that under these conditions the x-rays may have a strong bactericidal effect. The x-rays alone have a partial bactericidal action on water suspensions of typhoid bacilli.

Alpha-defensins are peptides secreted by polymorphonuclear cells and provide antimicrobial protection mediated by disruption of the integrity of bacterial cell walls. Staphylokinase is an exoprotein produced by Staphylococcus aureus, which activates host plasminogen. In this study, we analyzed the impact of interaction between alpha-defensins and staphylokinase on staphylococcal growth. We obse...

We recently described a total-cell-counting method for postantibiotic effect (PAE) assessments that performs well with weakly bactericidal antibiotics. This note presents a modified method for the study of PAE with extended capability to cover a broad range of bactericidal activities.

Bactericidal activity of human -defensin 3 (hBD-3) against Streptococcus mutans and Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans was inhibited in a dose-dependent manner by the presence of saliva and/or serum. Increasing the concentration of hBD-3 partially overcame this inhibition. A fast bactericidal effect was observed against both bacterial strains, suggesting a potential therapeutic use for hBD-3 ...

conclusions: despite the good in vitro bactericidal effect of amoxicillin on spiral forms of h. pylori, this antibiotic has little effect on induced coccoids that may develop after the inappropriate in vivo antibacterial treatment. hence, for successful therapy, it is essential not only to eradicate the spiral forms, but to eliminate the viable coccoids. background: helicobacter pylori (h. pylo...

use of herbal extracts and essences as natural antibacterial compounds has become increasingly popular for the control of oral infectious diseases. therefore, finding natural antimicrobial products with the lowest side effects seems necessary. the present study sought to assess the effect of punica granatum l. water extract on five oral bacteria and bacterial biofilm formation on orthodontic wi...
