A novel bifunctional naphthalimide-based [12]aneN3 compound 1 was successfully applied as an effective non-viral gene vector in cancer cells, the fluorescence properties of 1 clearly demonstrated the process of cellular uptake, DNA translocation and release based on real-time fluorescence tracking.

The assembly of double-stranded (ds) DNA nanocircles both by hybridization with branched oligodeoxynucleotides (ODNs) and by intercalation was analyzed by atomic force microscopy (AFM). Branched ODNs ligated to single-stranded (ss) gap regions of dsDNA nanocircles led to defined, dumbbell-shaped architectures. ODNs containing an aromatic intercalator yielded oligomeric aggregates.

Ethidium bromide has been extended by fusing an additional aromatic ring resulting in a larger intercalator with increased affinity for poly r(A) x r(U), poly d(A) x d(T) and triple helices when compared to the parent heterocycle.

An organocatalytic asymmetric synthesis of spironitrocyclopropanes has been demonstrated starting from 2-arylidene-1,3-indandiones and bromonitroalkanes catalyzed by a cinchona-derived bifunctional organocatalyst. The products were obtained with excellent enantioselectivities, diastereoselectivities and with good yields.

The RNA world hypothesis proposes that nucleic acids were once responsible for both information storage and chemical catalysis, before the advent of coded protein synthesis. However, it is difficult to imagine how nucleic acid polymers first appeared, as the abiotic chemical formation of long nucleic acid polymers from mononucleotides or short oligonucleotides remains elusive, and barriers to a...

DFT calculations have demonstrated that the unconventional bifunctional Brønsted-Lewis acid activation mode is generally applicable to a range of nucleophilic conjugate additions catalyzed by bicyclic guanidine catalysts. It competes readily with the conventional bifunctional Brønsted acid mode of activation. The optimal pro-nucleophiles for this unconventional bifunctional activation are acidi...
