Background: An alternative approach for managing Candida infections in the oral cavity by modulating the oral microbiota with probiotic bacteria has been proposed. Objective: The aim was to investigate the antifungal potential of the probiotic bacterium Lactobacillus reuteri (DSM 17938 and ATCC PTA 5289) against six oral Candida species (C. albicans, C. glabrata, C. krusei, C. tropicalis, C. du...

Two essential oils of Lippia alba (Mill.) N.E. Brown (Verbenacea), the carvone and citral chemotypes and 15 of their compounds were evaluated to determine cytotoxicity and antifungal activity. Cytotoxicity assays for both the citral and carvone chemotypes were carried out with tetrazolium-dye, which showed a dose-dependent cytotoxic effect against HeLa cells. Interestingly, this effect on the e...

OBJECTIVE To determine the susceptibilities of Candida species isolated from Taiwan to amphotericin B and fluconazole. DESIGN Prospective surveillance study. METHODS Each hospital was asked to submit up to 10 C. albicans and 40 non-albicans Candida species during the collection period, from April 15 to June 15, 1999. One isolate was accepted from each episode of infection. The broth microdi...

INTRODUCTION Resistance of Candida species to fluconazole has been increasingly reported worldwide. To date, the prevalence of resistance to fluconazole in Singapore is unknown. The aim of this study was to use a newly described agar disc diffusion method to study levels of susceptibility of Candida species to fluconazole in several hospitals in Singapore. MATERIALS AND METHODS Three hundred ...

Experience with anidulafungin against Candida krusei is limited. Immunosuppressed mice were injected with 1.3 x 10(7) to 1.5 x 10(7) CFU of C. krusei. Animals were treated with saline, 40 mg/kg fluconazole, 1 mg/kg amphotericin B, or 10 and 20 mg/kg anidulafungin for 5 days. Anidulafungin improved survival and significantly reduced the number of CFU/g in kidneys and serum beta-glucan levels.

OBJECTIVES Novel highly functionalized bis cyclohexenone ethyl carboxylates 7-12 were designed, synthesized and their structures were elucidated by their elemental analysis, MS, FT-IR, one-dimensional 1H, and 13C NMR spectroscopic data. MATERIALS AND METHODS All the synthesized compounds 7-12 were tested for their in vitro antifungal activities against Candida sp. namely Candida albicans, Can...

A total of 135 stomach samples from patients with gastrointestinal diseases and normal controls were examined for Helicobacter pylori infection and Candida colonization. Candida krusei was found in specimens from 20% bleeding, 52% ulcer, and 100% gastritis patients, whereas H. pylori infection rates were 82%, 35% and 30%, respectively, for the same groups of patients. C. krusei was not detected...

Tecoma stans (yellow elder) has shown medicinal properties and antimicrobial activity. Previous reports on antifungal activity of T. stans preparations and presence of trypsin inhibitor activity from T. stans leaves stimulated the investigation reported here. In this work, we proceeded to the purification and characterization of a trypsin inhibitor (TesTI), which was investigated for anti-Candi...

Eighty-five isolates of Candida recovered from three hundred and fifty diverse clinical sources, viz. respiratory tract (sputum, bronchial washing, bronchoalveolar lavage, tracheal aspirate), blood, urine, high vaginal swab, skin and plastic devices, were studied in detail for their morphological and biochemical characters. Seven species of Candida were identified, viz., C. albicans (45.8%), C. ...

Causative agent in majority of VVC is Candida albicans, but infection due to non-C. albicans is common. Use of empiric antifungal therapy in Brazil due to syndromic management of vulvovaginitis could act as risk factor for increase resistance among VVC causative agents. From Mato Grosso patients, 160 with culture-proved among 404 women who had clinical symptoms of VVC, were enrolled in this stu...
