The uncoupler, carbonyl cyanide m-chlorophenyl hydrazone (CCCP) is shown to reduce the hydraulic conductivity of barley, maize, mung bean, and onion roots. In barley and maize, the reduction in exudation from excised roots is partly due to the reduction in the permeability of the root to water (I(p)), but it can be inferred that the rate of salt release to the xylem, is also inhibited. The acti...

The antibacterial activity of human neutrophil defensin HNP-1 analogs without cysteines has been investigated. A peptide corresponding to the HNP-1 sequence without the six cysteines (HNP-1deltaC) exhibited antibacterial activity toward gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. Truncated analogs wherein the nine N-terminal residues of HNP-1 and the remaining three cysteines were deleted (HNP-1d...

Uncoupler CCCP inhibited the growth of Anabaena sp. CH1 and CH2 and reduced their photosynthetic rate and nitrogenase activity. It was determined that upon CCCP addition, nitrogenase activities of CH1 and CH2 declined to almost zero within 1 and 6 hours. Such decline may be caused by the direct inhibition of nitrogenase synthesis rather than by indirect interruption of the phosphorylation process.

The activation of papain with four different activators is not accompanied by the binding of any of them to the protein. These experiments, taken together with previously reported results, show that the inactive form of papain prepared by the method of Kimmel and Smith (J. Biol. Chem., 207, 5’75 (1954)) is a mixed disulfide formed between the active site sulfhydryl group of the protein and free...

The effects of various metabolic inhibitors on the motility of Spirochaeta aurantia were investigated. After 15 min in sodium arsenate buffer, 90% of cells remained motile even though adenosine triphosphate levels dropped from 5.6 to 0.1 nmol/mg (dry weight) of cells. After 70 min in sodium arsenate, 5% of cells were motile. Addition of phenazine methosulfate plus ascorbate at this time resulte...

Cyanation reactions of carbonyl compounds with methyl cyanoformate or acetyl cyanide catalyzed by 5 mol % of 1,5,7-triazabicyclo[4,4,0]dec-5-ene (TBD) were examined. Using methyl cyanoformate, the corresponding cyanohydrin carbonates were readily obtained in high yield for aromatic and aliphatic aldehydes and ketones. Similar results were obtained when acetyl cyanide was used as the cyanide sou...

The title compound, C(6)H(7)NO(2), is essentially planar with a dihedral angle of 3.6 (3)° between the pyrrole ring and the methoxy-carbonyl O/C/O/C plane. In the crystal structure, the N atom is a hydrogen-bond donor to the carboxylate C=O O atom of the neighboring mol-ecule. These inter-molecular hydrogen bonds lead to the formation of helical chains along the b axis.

A high-nuclearity metal-cyanide cluster [Mo6Cu14] has been prepared and its photomagnetic properties investigated. The photoswitchable magnetic phenomenon observed is thermally reversible (T≈ 230 K). In the field of photomagnetism, [Mo6Cu14] represents a unique example of a nanocage and the highest nuclearity observed so far.

The asymmetric unit of the title compound, C(10)H(13)NO(3), contains two crystallographically independent mol-ecules with different conformations of the eth-oxy-carbonyl groups; the terminal C-C-O-C torsion angles in the two mol-ecules are 83.6 (6) and -171.1 (3)°, resulting in twisted and straight chain conformations, respectively. The crystal structure is stabilized by inter-molecular N-H⋯O, ...

Facially amphiphilic urea oligomers were successfully prepared in a one-pot reaction by carbonyl diimidazole (CDI) coupling and showed greater antibacterial activity against both Gram-negative Escherichia coli and Gram-positive Bacillus subtilis than MSI-78.
