The in vitro effects of spectinomycin and ceftriaxone, alone or in combination with erythromycin, ofloxacin, and doxycycline, against Chlamydia trachomatis were investigated by the checkerboard method and compared by Ridit (reference identical unit) analysis. A combination of spectinomycin with erythromycin or doxycycline was found to be more effective than that of ceftriaxone.

Candida biofilms display increased resistance to most antifungal agents. We have evaluated the efficacy of combinations of fluconazole (FLC), amphotericin B, and caspofungin (CSP) against Candida albicans biofilms in vitro. Indifference was observed for all the combinations of paired antifungal agents when a checkerboard titration method was used. Time-kill experiments revealed an antagonistic ...

Latency times of visually evoked cortical potentials stimulated by reversal of a slow checkerboard pattern are highly dependent on the time needed to accomplish the reversal movement. If, owing to the method, the pattern reversal time is not kept stable, variability of the latency times is unnecessarily high for clinical purposes. This may be the case when television equipment is used.

A group-theoretical method, via Wada’s representations, is presented to distinguish Kishino’s virtual knot from the unknot. Biquandles are constructed for any group using Wada’s braid group representations. Cocycle invariants for these biquandles are studied. These invariants are applied to show the non-existence of Alexander numberings and checkerboard colorings.

The checkerboard extraction process is an important pre-preprocessing step in camera calibration. This project attempts to implement the checkerboard extraction processes using methods learned from EE368. This includes the isolation of the checkerboard using morphological operations. The benefit of the approach is that it is efficient since morphological operations can be implemented efficientl...

The combination of micafungin (MFG) with amphotericin B (AMB), fluconazole, itraconazole, voriconazole, or ravuconazole was evaluated against 37 strains of four species of Cryptococcus by the checkerboard method. Antagonism was never seen. Synergy was observed for some isolates for each combination and was most frequent with MFG-AMB.

The present study was aimed to compare the binding ability of selected chemicals (adjuvants) in 23 glycocalyx positive Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates. Fractional inhibitory concentration indexes (FICindex) and drug uptake study were conducted using selected adjuvants. Whole-cell alkaline phosphatase assay was used for assessment of outer membrane permeability. FICindex was calculated using a m...

The in vitro interactions of anidulafungin with itraconazole, voriconazole, and amphotericin B were evaluated by using the checkerboard method. For Aspergillus spp., anidulafungin with amphotericin B showed indifference for 16/26 isolates, while anidulafungin with either azole showed a synergy trend for 18/26 isolates. All drug combinations showed indifference for 7/7 Fusarium sp. isolates.

We performed high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy on an optimally-doped Ca2 xNaxCuO2Cl2 crystal with Tc 25 K. The so-called ‘‘checkerboard’’ local-density-of-state modulation previously found in heavily underdoped regime also manifests in the spectroscopic map of the optimally-doped sample. In addition, spatially-inhomogeneous energy gap with peaks at the gap edges is obse...

Sparse singular value decomposition (SSVD) is proposed as a new exploratory analysis tool for biclustering or identifying interpretable row-column associations within high-dimensional data matrices. SSVD seeks a low-rank, checkerboard structured matrix approximation to data matrices. The desired checkerboard structure is achieved by forcing both the left- and right-singular vectors to be sparse...
