Osteoblasts play critical roles in bone formation. Our previous study showed that chitosan nanofibers can stimulate osteoblast proliferation and maturation. This translational study used an animal model of bone defects to evaluate the effects of chitosan nanofiber scaffolds on bone healing and the possible mechanisms. In this study, we produced uniform chitosan nanofibers with fiber diameters o...

A hybrid cell sheet engineering approach was developed using ultra-thin nanofiber arrays to host the formation of composite nanofiber/cell sheets. It was found that confluent aligned cell sheets could grow on uniaxially-aligned and crisscrossed nanofiber arrays with extremely low fiber densities. The porosity of the nanofiber sheets was sufficient to allow aligned linear myotube formation from ...

BACKGROUND The study investigated the use of combined photodynamic therapy (PDT) and stent placement for the treatment of cholangiocarcinoma (CC). For this purpose, 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) was incorporated into poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) nanofiber, and coated onto metal stents. Their efficacy was assessed in PDT towards HuCC-T1 CC cells. METHODS Fabrication of ALA-PVA nanofiber, and simult...

Size-controlled spherical silver nanoparticles (<10 nm) and chitin-nanofiber sheet composites (Ag NPs/CNFS) have previously been reported to have strong antimicrobial activity in vitro. Although Ag NPs/CNFS have strong antimicrobial activity, their cytotoxicity has not been investigated. This study was performed to evaluate the effects of Ag NPs/CNFS on cytotoxicity for fibroblasts in vitro and...

BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to fabricate the poly caprolactone (PCL) aligned nanofiber scaffold and to evaluate the survival, adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation of rat hair follicle stem cells (HFSC) in the graft material using electrospun PCL nanofiber scaffold for tissue engineering applications. METHODS The bulge region of rat whisker was isolated and cultured in DMEM: n...

Nanofiber mats have been widely applied in various biomedical fields such as drug delivery, tissue repair and wound dressing. In this study, the curcumin-loaded mesoporous silica incorporated nanofiber mats were prepared using blend electrospinning of curcumin-loaded mesoporous silica nanoparticles (CCM-MSNs) and polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) for hemostasis. The prepared mats were then evaluated ...

The debilitating effects of rotator cuff tears and the high incidence of failure associated with current grafts underscore the clinical demand for functional solutions for tendon repair and augmentation. To address this challenge, we have designed a poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) nanofiber-based scaffold for rotator cuff tendon tissue engineering. In addition to scaffold design and character...

Dear Friends, Nanofibrous scaffolds have been a major revolution in the field of tissue engineering which may improve the health and quality of life by enhancing tissue function. These are the artificial extracellular matrices which offer natural surroundings for tissue formation. Owing to their high surface to volume ratio, nanofibrous scaffolds increase cell adhesion, proliferation, and diffe...

Stabilizer-free polyaniline nanofiber aqueous colloids were obtained by the direct dispersing of polyaniline nanofiber prepared in the presence of β-cyclodextrin. The polyaniline nanofiber, the diameters of which are between 80 and 100 nm, can be steadily dispersed in near neuter (pH=6.5) aqueous solution for about 60 days without any steric or electrostatic stabilizer. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. A highly crystalline polyethylene nanofiber is deflected by a cantilever under an atomic force microscope. The resulting approach and retract curves on both nanofiber and silicon substrate yield the Young's modulus of the nanofiber. The experiments show that the average Young's modulus of polyethylene nanofibers with diameters from 70 nm to 260 nm can be as high as 312 GPa.
