A 63-year-old female with chronic renal failure on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis developed chronic peritonitis. A CDC group EO-3 organism was isolated from the peritoneal dialysis fluid on five occasions over a period of 4 months. This is the first reported isolation of this organism in which it is associated with a patient on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis.

Discontinuation of acute, unplanned dialysis is always an important therapeutic goal in dialysis-requiring patients with existing chronic kidney disease. Only a limited proportion of patients could be weaned off dialysis and remained dialysis-free. Here we performed a multicenter, observational study to investigate factors associated with successful weaning from acute dialysis, and to explore t...

OBJECTIVES The aim of this multicenter nationwide study was to reveal the influence of social and non-medical factors on qualifying children to commence chronic dialysis, to withhold it or to withdraw it. BACKGROUND During the past decade, a trend has been observed in the United States toward initiation of chronic dialysis at higher levels of estimated glomerular filtration rate. This likely reflects secular trends in the composition of the dialysis population and a tendency toward initiation of dialysis earlier in the course of kidney disease. METHODS The goal of this study was to generate mo...

BACKGROUND It is estimated that 20-50% of adult patients start chronic dialysis therapy without prior contact with a nephrologist. The aim of this nationwide study was to assess clinical and metabolic status of children at the start of chronic dialysis in Poland with regard to the timing of the referral to a nephrologist. METHODS We studied data of 180 children (mean age 14+/-6 years) undergo...

Background: The prognosis of chronic dialysis patients is poor, in part due to the high incidence of cardiovascular disease and malnutrition. It has been recognized that 30-50% of hemodialysis patients have serological evidence of an activated inflammatory response. Chronic inflammation may cause malnutrition and progressive atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. It would be obvious interest t...
