Immunoglobulin G to human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) and cytomegalovirus (CMV) in sera from solid organ recipients was measured by an enzyme-linked immunoassay (ELISA) before and after transplant. The HHV-6 ELISA was developed from glycine extracts of HHV-6-infected and uninfected HSB-2 cells. At a serum dilution of 1:500, 80 (91%) of 88 recipients were seropositive for HHV-6 before transplant, whil...

CYTOMEGALOVIRUS (CMV) remains a common complication after renal transplantation. As previously reported. CMV has a significant impact not only on the clinical outcome after transplantation but also on its cost; for patients with CMV. cost is increased 2.9-fold as a result of extended hospitalization. I The risk of developing CMV disease after renal transplantation is highest in seronegative pat...

cytomegalovirus (cmv) infection can cause colitis which is usually manifested with fever, weight loss, anorexia and abdominal pain.watery diarrhea can be the only manifestation. cmv colitis usually can not be diagnosed according to the clinical findings. moreover, endoscopic appearance can exactly mimic pseudo-membranous colitis. here by, we are presenting a patient with fever and watery diarrh...

Infection with cytomegalovirus (CMV), a beta-herpesvirus, is common within the population. Although asymptomatic, infection is associated with increased serum concentrations of cytokines such as TNFalpha and IL-6, which are also related to mood and wellbeing. The present study examined whether infection with CMV was associated with mood in a community-based sample of older adults. Blood samples...

Older adults are more vulnerable to influenza virus infection and at higher risk for severe complications and influenza-related death compared to younger adults. Unfortunately, influenza vaccine responses tend to be impaired in older adults due to aging of the immune system (immunosenescence). Latent infection with cytomegalovirus (CMV) is assumed to enhance age-associated deleterious changes o...

BACKGROUND Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and cytomegalovirus (CMV) are persistent herpesviruses that have various immunomodulatory effects on their hosts. Both viruses are usually acquired in infancy in Sub-Saharan Africa, a region where childhood vaccines are less effective than in high income settings. To establish whether there is an association between these two observations, we tested the hypot...

Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) were developed for quantifying cytomegalovirus (CMV) and rubella antibodies using a single serum dilution (1/800) in conjunction with a standard curve. A near linear relation was found between the logarithms of absorbance values of sera at a dilution of 1/800 and the titres as determined by an end point dilution ELISA. The reproducibility of the single...

Immunostaining was compared with PCR for diagnosis of congenital CMV infection. IgM and IgG antibody assays were also performed in parallel. Immunostaining gave sensitivity and specificity of 60% and 97% respectively. Correlations among immunostaining, PCR and the presence of IgM antibody was reported. Immunostaining can be used for early diagnosis of congenital CMV infection in parallel with d...

The Virogen CMV Antibody Test is a simple and rapid latex agglutination assay for the detection of cytomegalovirus antibody in human serum and plasma. Evaluation of this assay with respect to enzyme immunoassay yielded a sensitivity of 98% with a specificity of 100%. In comparison to CMVScan, the Virogen CMV Antibody Test had a sensitivity of 98.4% and a specificity of 100%.

BACKGROUND Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), cytomegalovirus (CMV), and herpes simplex virus type-1 (HSV-1) infections are common worldwide, but age-specific prevalence of primary infection varies by race or ethnicity and geographical location. Comparing demographic groups could identify factors influencing the rate of acquisition, age-specific antibody prevalence is relevant for determining when to ad...
