The in vitro activity of the fluoroquinolone CP-99,219 against gram-positive bacteria was compared with those of five other antimicrobial agents. Against ciprofloxacin-susceptible staphylococci and against streptococci, MICs were < or = 0.12 and < or = 0.5 microgram/ml, respectively. CP-99,219 was also more active than ciprofloxacin against ciprofloxacin-resistant staphylococci, most enterococc...

We evaluated the Roche LightCycler Staphylococcus M(GRADE) kits to differentiate between Staphylococcus aureus and coagulase-negative staphylococci in blood cultures growing clusters of gram-positive cocci. Testing 100 bottles (36 containing S. aureus), the assay was 100% sensitive and 98.44% specific for S. aureus and 100% sensitive and specific for coagulase-negative staphylococci.

A Swedish bovine and a Dutch human phage set for coagulase-negative staphylococci were used to phage type coagulase-negative staphylococci isolated from bovine milk from Minnesota dairy herds. A comparison was also made of the deoxyribonuclease activity of coagulase-negative staphylococci isolated from bovine milk in Sweden and Minnesota. Of 133 Minnesota isolates, only one could be typed with ...

The addition of NaCl to cation-supplemented Mueller-Hinton broth increased the MICs of gentamicin, amikacin, and netilmicin for coagulase-positive and -negative staphylococci in a concentration-dependent manner. At 2% NaCl, geometric mean MICs were elevated 14.1- to 25.6-fold. Mueller-Hinton broth containing added NaCl should not be used for testing the susceptibility of staphylococci to aminog...

This study was carried out to determine the prevalence of sub-clinical mastitis, its etiological agents and their antibiogram in Murrah buffaloes at an organized farm. A total of 326 quarter milk samples were screened from 82 apparently healthy buffaloes. The percent prevalence of sub-clinical mastitis was found to be lower on the basis of SCC (>5x105/ml) alone (23.17) as compared to cultural e...

Background: The role of gram-positive cocci especially Staphylococci species in causing urinary tract infection are well known. Among the Staphylococci species Methicillin Resistance Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is the most important. The rate of MRSA is increasing worldwide. This is alarming because the danger of these organism in public health. Therefore the aim of this study was to determine...

Camel milk requires more calf rennet than cow milk to coagulate and the relative amount of rennet needed varies widely (2, 8, 14, 16). Extracts of adult camel abomasa have been used to coagulate cow milk with success (5, 6, 7). However, these enzymes have not been tried on camel milk. Rennet extracts from lamb and cow calves were found to be more effective with the milk of the respective specie...

A total of 350 staphylococci isolated from various clinical sources were examined for bound and free coagulase, fermentation of mannitol, and deoxyribonuclease. The economical coagulase-mannitol-agar method of Esber and Faulcomer was found to be suitable for the detection of free coagulase and mannitol fermentation. A significant number of coagulase- and mannitol-negative staphylococci proved t...

Background: Staphylococci are recognized worldwide as one of the most important etiological agents of bovine mastitis due to their virulence factors such as their ability to penetrate inside mammary epithelial cells and their ability to form biofilm. Aims: The objectives of this study were to establish a model of primary mammary epithelial cells origin...
