Severe violet root rot occurred in a field of membranous milk vetch in Bonghwa, Korea, in October 2010. Two fungal isolates from the diseased plants were identified as Helicobasidium mompa based on their morphological, cultural, and molecular characteristics. This is the first report that H. mompa causes violet root rot on membranous milk vetch in Korea.

Mixed cropping systems can constitute important agroecological adaptation strategies for enhancing crop growth and productivity in view of climate change, while reducing the need synthetic fertilizers providing ecosystem services. The aim this study was to investigate growth, competitiveness, two forage mixtures combining triticale (X triticosecale Wittmack) common vetch (Vicia sativa L.), fenu...

In annual forage legumes such as the common vetch (Vicia sativa L.), in which the pods represent a substantial proportion of the total biomass, the optimum harvesting stage may not adjust to the classical model of decreasing nutritive value after flowering. The effect of harvest time on the yield of the main chemical components of common vetch was evaluated under field conditions typical of the...

Grain legumes, such as soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.), pea (Pisum sativum L.), faba bean (Vicia faba L.), lupins (Lupinus spp.), common vetch (Vicia sativa L.) and grass pea (Lathyrus sativus L.), represent one of the most quality and least expensive solutions for a long-term demand for plant protein in animal husbandry. One of the limitations to an increased use of grain legumes as feed is t...

Root segments of vetch, barley, and pine were exposed to a nutrient solution containing (85)Sr and (45)Ca tracers. Translocation was measured from solutions containing stable ions at concentrations of 2.5 mm Ca, and at either 0.5 mm or 2.5 mm Sr. Polar transport was established between 12 and 18 hr in barley, and between 16 and 22 hr in vetch. Acropetal transport remained below 5% of basipetal ...

Vegetable production is heavily dependent upon high off-farm inputs of polyethylene (plastic) mulch, nitrogen fertilizer and pesticides. Such a production practice potentially contributes to the unintentional environmental pollution with fertilizer and pesticides as well as water run off and soil erosion. This raises serious environmental concerns for human and animal health. The integration of...

three experiments were conducted to evaluate the nutritional value of bitter vetch. experiment 1 was conducted to determine the metabolisable energy content of bitter vetch. sixteen adult leghorn roosters were used. forty grams of bitter vetch were precision-fed individually to 12 roosters. in addition, 4 birds were not fed and served as a control treatment in the measurement of metabolic fecal...

The vetch (Vicia sativa) is one of the most important annual forage legumes globally due to its multiple uses and high nutritional content. Despite these agronomical benefits, many drawbacks, including cyano-alanine toxin, has reduced the agronomic value of vetch varieties. Here, we used 454 technology to sequence the two V. sativa subspecies (ssp. sativa and ssp. nigra) to enrich functional in...
