BACKGROUND Our aim was to determine if there is a correlation between corneal biomechanical properties, endothelial cell count, and corneal pachymetry in healthy corneas. MATERIAL/METHODS Ninety-two eyes of all subjects underwent complete ocular examination, including intraocular pressure measurement by Goldmann applanation tonometer, objective refraction, and slit-lamp biomicroscopy. Topogra...

PURPOSE Although penetrating keratoplasty is generally considered a successful procedure, transplanted corneal tissue may exhibit abnormal epithelium, decreased sensation, and declining endothelial cell counts after surgery. This study aimed to use in vivo confocal microscopy to correlate corneal microstructure and recovery of the subbasal nerve plexus of the transplanted cornea with indication...

PURPOSE Corneal endothelial cells in humans do not replicate to any meaningful extent. Diminishing density of the cell monolayer with age and in the disease states is a major cause of loss of corneal transparency. This study was conducted to test the hypothesis that overexpression of the transcription factor E2F2 results in replication in nonproliferating human corneal endothelial cells. METH...

PURPOSE To compare corneal structures in buphthalmic eyes and healthy eyes in patients with unilateral congenital glaucoma using a corneal confocal microscope. METHODS Ten patients with unilateral buphthalmos (mean ± SD age, 14.85 ± 5.12 years) were examined using corneal confocal microscopy. The cell density and cell area of endothelial cells and superficial and basal epithelial cells and th...

Corneal endothelial cell density was measured in normal subjects and in a group of monozygotic and dizygotic twins. Cell density was found to decline with age and to be similar in right and left eyes in normal subjects. Both monozygotic and dizygotic twins were found to have very similar mean endothelial cells densities and particularly so in like-sided eyes.
