htp:// D ow nladed fom Maximizing the sustainable supercurrent density, JC, is crucial to high-current applications of superconductivity. To achieve this, preventing dissipative motion of quantized vortices is key. Irradiation of superconductors with highenergy heavy ions can be used to create nanoscale defects that act as deep pinning potentials for vortices. This approach holds unique promise...

Universal scaling laws can guide the understanding of new phenomena, and for cuprate high-temperature superconductivity the influential Uemura relation showed, early on, that the maximum critical temperature of superconductivity correlates with the density of the superfluid measured at low temperatures. Here we show that the charge content of the bonding orbitals of copper and oxygen in the ubi...

In the quest to increase the critical temperature Tc of cuprate superconductors, it is essential to identify the factors that limit the strength of superconductivity. The upper critical field Hc2 is a fundamental measure of that strength, yet there is no agreement on its magnitude and doping dependence in cuprate superconductors. Here we show that the thermal conductivity can be used to directl...

We studied the pressure-induced superconductivity of BaLi4 up to 53 GPa by means of electrical resistivity in a diamond anvil cell. Superconductivity in BaLi4 is first observed at a pressure of 5.4 GPa with a superconducting critical temperature (Tc) of 4.5 K. Below 2 GPa, superconductivity is not observed above the minimum temperature achievable in the current study, 2 K. Between 5.4 and 12 GP...
