A three-dimensional culture of cortical tissues derived from pluripotent stem cells offers an opportunity to model human brain development and disorders. In a recent issue of Nature, Lancaster et al. describe a new method for generating cerebral organoids in a dish and use it to model microcephaly.

We improved adhesiveness of a neuron-like cell, PC12, on a Parylene-C surface by O(2) plasma treatment which changes the surface from hydrophobic to hydrophilic. Neural cell adhesiveness on the plasma-treated Parylene-C was more than twenty times better compared to non-treated Parylene-C and it was close to that on a conventional polystyrene tissue-culture dish.

The hanging drop tissue culture is a technique utilized in embryology [4] and other fields to allow growth that would otherwise be restricted by the flat plane of culture dishes and also to minimize the surface area to volume ratio, slowing evaporation. The classic hanging drop culture is a small drop of liquid, such as plasma or some other media allowing tissue growth, suspended from an invert...

Nematodes produced in monoxenic culture are used for many research purposes. To maximize the number of Heterodera glycines produced in culture, 24 soybean cultivars (maturity groups 0-8) were evaluated for host suitability. A strain of H. glycines race 3, maintained in monoxenic culture on excised soybean root tips of cv. Kent, was inoculated into 20 petri dishes of each cultivar. The highest n...

Quiescent BALB/c-3T3 cells exposed briefly to platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) become "competent" to replicate their DNA even if PDGF is removed from cell culture medium prior to the onset of DNA synthesis. We have suggested that persistence of the PDGF-induced competent state reflects a rapidly induced and relatively stable biochemical change within the target cells. Others suggest that t...

The chick embryo is a valuable tool in the study of early embryonic development. Its transparency, accessibility and ease of manipulation, make it an ideal tool for studying the formation and patterning of brain, neural tube, somite and heart primordia. Applications of chick embryo culture include electroporation of DNA or RNA constructs in order to analyze gene function, grafts of growth facto...

We hypothesized that functional constructs with physiological cell densities can be engineered in vitro by mimicking convective-diffusive oxygen transport normally present in vivo. To test this hypothesis, we designed an in vitro culture system that maintains efficient oxygen supply to the cells at all times during cell seeding and construct cultivation and characterized in detail construct met...
