The Rst(2)DDT locus (loci) in Drosophila is associated with the over-expression of two cytochrome P450 genes, Cyp6g1 and Cyp12d1. Using northern and western blot analysis we observed the expression pattern of these two genes in two DDT susceptible (Canton-S and 91-C) and three DDT resistant strains (Wisconsin, 91-R and Hikone-R). In Canton-S and 91-R, the CYP6G1 protein was constitutively expre...

BACKGROUND 1-chloro-4-[2,2,2-trichloro-1-(4-chlorophenyl)ethyl]benzene (p,p'-DDT) is a persistent environmental endocrine disruptor (ED). Several studies have shown an association between p,p'-DDT exposure and reproductive abnormalities. OBJECTIVES To investigate the putative effects of p,p'-DDT on the human follitropin receptor (FSHR) function. METHODS AND RESULTS We used Chinese hamster o...

Mg0/Pd4+ was able to dechlorinate >99% of extractable DDT (initial concentration of 10 mg DDT kg(-1) of soil) and >90% of extractable DDT (initial concentration of 50 mg DDT kg(-1) of soil) in soil slurry. Mg0/Pd4+ was also found to be effective in dechlorinating of 50 mg kg(-1) DDD and DDE, in soil aged for varying time periods. GC-MS analyses revealed the formation of 1,1-diphenylethane as an...

INTRODUCTION The use of p,p'-dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) has been banned since the late 1970s due to its toxicity. However, its long half-life makes it persistent in the environment and, consequently, almost everyone has DDT residues in the body. Human milk constitutes an ideal non-conventional matrix to investigate environmental chronic exposure to organochlorine compounds (OCs) resi...

Estimation of DDT by GLC (gas liquid chromatography) in K.U. strain of Culex fatigans L., shows that 59.68 ng DDT is found after the treatment with 0.175 ppm. In G.I. strain 18.3 ng DDT is found after treatment with 0.325 ppm whereas 4.35 ng DDT is found in L.Y. strain after the treatment with 0.425 ppm.

Estrogens play a critical role in the etiology of found breast cancer. Estradiol promotes the growth of breast cancer cells in vivo and in vitro. Exogenous estrogens in both the environment and in the human diet increase the growth of breast cancer cells in vitro. A role for xenoestrogens in breast cancer etiology has been proposed but remains controversial. We examined the effects of the xenoe...

BACKGROUND Although DDT [1,1,1-trichloro-2,2-bis(4-chlorophenyl)ethane] has been banned in many countries since the 1970s, it may still pose a risk to human respiratory health. In agriculture, DDT exposures have been associated with asthma and chronic bronchitis. However, little is known about the effect of DDT on lung function. METHODS We used data on 1,696 participants 20-79 years of age fr...

Exposure to organochlorine pesticides, including DDT, has previously been associated with premature birth. Using an improved protocol to characterize dose and time dependent responses, the present report extends a preliminary finding by this laboratory that o,p'-DDT directly stimulates uterine contractility. Contraction frequency was determined in longitudinal uterine strips from pregnant rats ...

DDT is an organochlorine insecticide that has found a broad range of agricultural and nonagricultural applications in the United States and worldwide beginning in 1939. In 1972, DDT use was banned in the United States and in many parts of the world, except for use in controlling emergency public health problems. DDT is still used in certain parts of the world to control vector-borne diseases, s...
