We report herein a technique for the repair of recurrent diaphragmatic hernia after repair of diaphragmatic rupture. Although chest roentgenography and computed tomography in a patient who presented with postprandial abdominal pain demonstrated a left intrathoracic intestinal shadow, the hernia was disregarded. To repair a diaphragmatic rupture along with intrathoracic adhesions, we performed a...
While a diaphragmatic rupture commonly results from trauma to the abdomen and chest, a spontaneous diaphragmatic rupture is very rare. A 68-year-old male presented with chest pain that had originated while doing farm work in a squatting position. Images revealed a 5 cm defect of the left diaphragmatic dome, and the entire stomach was displaced into the thorax. The diaphragmatic defect was round...
The widespread use of meshes for hiatal hernia repair has emerged in the era of laparoscopic surgery, although sporadic cases of mesh augmentation of traumatic diaphragmatic rupture have been reported. The indications for biologic meshes in diaphragmatic repair are ill defined. This systematic review aims to investigate the available evidence on the role of biologic meshes in diaphragmatic rupt...
We present a 45-year-old female patient who developed diaphragmatic rupture and secondary hernia following a diaphragmatic resection for a diaphragmatic abnormality with spontaneous pneumothorax performed by endoscopic stapling in video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS). This complication can be avoided by careful direct repair of the diaphragmatic incision in addition to endoscopic stapling.
A two-year-old, male, neutered, domestic shorthair cat was presented after suspected trauma. Diaphragmatic rupture with concomitant displacement of the right kidney into the thorax was diagnosed using ultrasound and intravenous urography. Avulsion of the renal pedicle and diaphragmatic rupture were confirmed and treated surgically with excellent outcome.
OBJECTIVE Traumatic diaphragmatic injuries are rare, but potentially life-threatening due to herniation of abdominal organs into the pleural cavities. They can be easily overlooked on initial diagnostics and a high index of suspicion is required. The aim of this retrospective study was to analyze the clinical presentation, diagnostic methods and surgical management of patients with diaphragmati...
