INTRODUCTION Diarrheagenic Escherichia coli (DEC) represents one of the leading cause of diarrhoea in developing countries. In this study a molecular approach was applied for the detection of diarrheagenic Escherichia coli (DEC) circulating in Maputo, Mozambique. METHODOLOGY All isolates were PCR tested for species-specific genes and for 11 molecular markers: stx1, stx2, eae, bfpA, lt, st, ip...

The so called enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) O serogroups include typical and atypical EPEC, enterohaemorrragic E. coli, enterotoxigenic E. coli, and enteroaggregative E. coli. The aim of this article is to review the composition of each O serogroup and the major serotypes, clones, and additional virulence characteristics of each of these diarrheagenic categories. Their adherence patt...

aim : we aimed to develop a multiplex pcr assay for specific detection of epec and ehec pathotypes based on specific marker genes. background : about 2.5 million infant’s morbidity in developing countries occurs by e.coli pathotypes because of diarrhea and intestinal diseases. the traditional phenotypic methods are time consuming and sometimes detection and differentiation of the pathotypes are...

Integrons by means of horizontal gene transfer carry multidrug resistance genes (MDR) among bacteria, including E. coli. The aim of this study was to determine the antibiotic resistance profiles and the genes associated with them, to gain insights in the distribution of phylogroups, prevalence, and characterization of class 1, 2 and 3 integrons among Enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) isolates, fr...

Escherichia coli strains of nonenteropathogenic serogroups carrying eae but lacking the enteropathogenic E. coli adherence factor plasmid and Shiga toxin DNA probe sequences were isolated from patients (children, adults, and AIDS patients) with and without diarrhea in Brazil. Although diverse in phenotype and genotype, some strains are potentially diarrheagenic.

Stool specimens from 113 adult outpatients with diarrhea in southwestern Nigeria and 63 controls were examined for bacterial and parasitic enteric pathogens. Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) (P < 0.02), enteroaggregative E. coli (EAEC) (P < 0.02), and Entamoeba histolytica (P < 0.0002) were significantly associated with diarrhea. Salmonella, Shigella, nontoxigenic Vibrio cholerae, othe...

We report the draft genome sequences of the collection referred to as the Escherichia coli DECA collection, which was assembled to contain representative isolates of the 15 most common diarrheagenic clones in humans (http://shigatox.net/new/). These genomes represent a valuable resource to the community of researchers who examine these enteric pathogens.

BACKGROUND Apart from localized gastrointestinal infections, Escherichia coli and Salmonella species are major causes of systemic disease in both humans and animals. Salmonella spp. cause invasive infections such as enteric fever, septicemia, osteomyelitis and meningitis while certain types of E. coli can cause systemic infections, includingpyelonephritis, meningitis and septicemia. These chara...

Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) are a common cause for food-borne diarrheal illness outbreaks and sporadic cases. Here, we report the availability of the draft genome sequences of 228 STEC strains representing 32 serotypes with known pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) types and epidemiological relationships, as well as 12 strains representing other diarrheagenic E. coli patho...
