Atomic oxygen O(3P) is a potent oxidant that has been well-studied in the gas phase. However, exploration of its reactivity in the condensed organic phase has been hampered by the lack of an appropriate source. Dibenzothiophene-S-oxide (DBTO) and related derivatives have been promoted as photochemical O(3P) sources but suffer from low quantum yields. Photolysis of dibenzoselenophene-Se-oxide (D...

The reactivity of the nickel(I) dimer [(dippe)Ni(mu-H)](2) (1) with biphenyl-2-thiol was explored with the aim of clarifying the key step of sulfur extrusion during the hydrodesulfurization process using dibenzothiophene (DBT). These reactions were monitored by variable temperature NMR experiments which allowed the complete characterization and isolation of [(dippe)(2)Ni(2)(mu-H)(mu-S-2-bipheny...

With stoichiometric H(2)O(2) as oxidant, dibenzothiophene (DBT) is oxidized to its corresponding sulfone with high efficiency, catalyzed by a sub-valence heteronuclear peroxotungstate, [C(18)H(37)N(CH(3))(3)](4)[H(2)Se(IV)(3)W(6)O(34)], under mild biphase conditions and the catalyst shows remarkable selectivity of catalytic oxidation towards DBT, cinnamyl alcohol and quinoline.

Gordonia amicalis strain CCMA-559 was isolated from an oil-contaminated mangrove swamp and shown to produce biosurfactants. This strain is a strict aerobe that readily degrades an array of carbon sources, including N-acetylglucosamine, cellobiose, Tween 80, and 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, and, like other G. amicalis strains, likely desulfurizes dibenzothiophene.

C-S bond cleavage in thiophene, benzothiophene and dibenzothiophene is achieved under biphasic conditions by the water-soluble cluster cation [H(4)Ru(4)(C(6)H(6))(4)](2+) which is converted into the disulfido cluster [H(2)S(2)Ru(4)(C(6)H(6))(4)](2+).

Mechanistic aspects of the novel gas-phase generation of dibenzothiophene via coupling of thioanisole and chlorobenzene, employing atomic Ho(+) as a catalyst, have been investigated using Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry in conjunction with density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Incorporation of dibenzothiophene-S,S-dioxide units into conjugated fluorene oligomers changes the frontier orbital energy levels and presents an effective way to increase the electron affinity of these materials, which are highly fluorescent with bright blue emission in both solution and the solid state.

Photolysis of derivatives of dimethylmalonate thiophene-S,C-ylide provides dicarbomethoxycarbene, which can react with thiophene to form dimethyl (2-thienyl)malonate. By generation of dicarbomethoxycarbene from the dibenzothiophene-based ylide in neat thiophene, it is shown that the thienylmalonate is not a product of rearrangement of the thiophene ylide, in contrast to thermolysis results. For...
