Group A streptococcal pyrogenic exotoxins A, B, and C (also known as scarlet fever toxins and erythrogenic toxins) were evaluated for relatedness to another streptococcus-derived lymphocyte mitogen, blastogen A. Streptococcal pyrogenic exotoxin A and blastogen A were immunologically cross-reactive and shared the same molecular weight, N-terminal amino acid sequence, and capacity to stimulate ra...
Among 10 strains of community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) isolated in 2002 from patients with skin infections, seven harbored the Panton-Valentine leukocidin gene, two harbored the exfoliative toxin A gene, and one harbored neither of these genes. CA-MRSA isolates producing a variety of exotoxins are currently spreading in the Swiss community.
Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) infection is an emerging community pathogen. Community-acquired MRSA (CA-MRSA) has been associated with virulent strains producing Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL) and a variety of other exotoxins. In Geneva, PVL-producing CA-MRSA was first reported in 2002 and a surveillance system based on voluntary reporting was set up.
Proinflammatory cytokines mediate the toxic effect of superantigenic staphylococcal exotoxins (SE). Doxycycline inhibited SE-stimulated T-cell proliferation and production of cytokines and chemokines by human peripheral blood mononuclear cells. These results suggest that the antibiotic doxycycline has anti-inflammatory effects and is therapeutically useful for mitigating the pathogenic effects ...
Proinflammatory cytokines mediate the toxic effect of superantigenic staphylococcal exotoxins (SE). A pan-caspase inhibitor suppressed SE-stimulated T-cell proliferation and the production of cytokines and chemokines by human peripheral blood mononuclear cells. These data suggest that caspase inhibitors may represent a novel therapeutic modality for treating SE-induced toxic shock.
Bacillus anthracis is a Gram-positive bacterium that causes anthrax, mainly in herbivores through exotoxins and capsule produced on plasmids, pXO1 and pXO2. This paper compares the whole-genome sequences of two B. anthracis strains from an endemic region and a sporadic outbreak in South Africa. Sequencing was done using next-generation sequencing technologies.
The effect of growth phase on expression of virulence-associated factors was studied by Northern hybridization in an M1T1 clinical isolate of Streptococcus pyogenes. Expression of M protein, C5a peptidase, and capsule was maximal in the exponential phase of growth, while streptococcal pyrogenic exotoxins A and B and mitogenic factor were maximally expressed in later phases of growth.
